horn nosed beetles broke my pool

Horned Nosed Beetles and Above Ground Pools

After building above ground pools for many years, I don’t get many callbacks on my bottoms. Some above grounds are made with bottoms of foam sheeting, happy bottoms (which are thin sheets of hard plastic), vermiculite, pearlite, or concrete. The vast majority of them use only the earth of the yard and maybe some sand for the bottom and that’s usually perfectly OK. An experienced installer can make a nice smooth bottom using just the earth that is there. We usually use only the earth for the pool bottom due to the extra cost of the materials mentioned above. An above ground swimming pool is, after all, a much less expensive alternative to in-grounds. So, for most, keeping the cost down is important.

There are a few drawbacks to having only an earth bottom and one of the drawbacks is horned nosed beetles. I started this blog post saying that I don’t get many callbacks on my bottoms, but I did get three this season because of something sharp poking up from under the liner. Out of the three calls, one was because of a horned nosed beetle. Let me tell you about them. (more…)

8 Reasons You Should Install an Above Ground Pool in the Off-Season

In most areas of the country, above ground pool installers are few and far between.  Here in Central Florida there are more installers than average and even with that they are hard to find. When you find us, it’s usually when you want your above ground pool installed which is in the summer. And that’s when we are all very busy.

People are funny. Not funny like a clown (take it easy, Joe Pesci). Just funny in that most won’t react until they feel like it, even if it makes sense to act well before that. Take having an above ground swimming pool installed for example. People call me in the off-season and we work out the details of installing their specific pool. During this process, I will encourage them to have the job done prior to the busy season of summer and they agree. Then, what do they do? They wait until May or June to call for the actual installation. Certainly they are disappointed when I tell them it’s going to be three weeks before I can get to them. And, if it’s a big project, I won’t even do it in the summer as it is too hot and I have too many other smaller jobs that I can do and not risk heart failure from the intense outdoor heat. (more…)

Above ground pool vs an inground pool

Above Ground Pool vs. In-ground Pool

I do my work in Central Florida. Here it’s home to Mickey Mouse, great weather, some old people, and at least one alligator in every natural body of water. Central Florida is also known as the area in the US with the second most concrete swimming pools. That’s right. We’ve got some concrete in-ground pools up here. We’ve also got a lot of above ground pools too.

More northern parts of the country are dominated by above ground pools for a few reasons, but down here and in other areas, homeowners have a choice. As an above ground pool installer, I can’t tell you how many people tell me how they were going to get an in-ground pool, but… So they instead got an above ground. As you can imagine, I’ve heard every reason (sometimes in unwanted great detail) why they chose an above ground over the in-ground. If you are finding yourself deciding on whether to get an above ground or an in-ground swimming pool and you found this blog post, then read on. I’ll cover the great battle of above ground versus in-ground swimming pools. (more…)

“Off Level” Above Ground Pools

With the invention of YouTube, I have seen a lot of above ground pool installations done by do-it-yourselfers. I have also seen a lot of installation attempts as people call me halfway through for help. Some of these self-installations are done well, but most are not. I have occasionally been amazed at the ability of some to do a nice job on the not so easy job of building an above ground pool. Though, most really struggled with the project and barely got it together, lost friends and destroyed marriages. (more…)
