Can a leaf canister be used with the Hayward DV5000 cleaner?

Yes, a leaf canister can be used with this cleaner. There are two different leaf canisters that can be used with this cleaner. There is a Standard Leaf Canister which you can view and purchase by clicking here. There is also a Large Capacity Leaf Canister with a Mesh Bag that you can view and purchase by clicking here.

Is this suitable for irregular shaped pools?

Hello Anne - This cleaner would work in a irregular shaped pool. The Hayward DV5000 is what is called a " random cleaner " meaning that the water current will be directing the motion of this cleaner. In short, the hose pulls this around. The great thing about these cleaners is the one moving part, the diaphragm. The down side is if this gets close to a return jet, the cleaner will never clean that area.

Being a first time pool owner, I do not understand how this type of suction cleaner works. What does the round pad do?

A suction side cleaner is essentially a vacuum cleaner that runs off the suction power of your main pool pump. The cleaner’s hose is connected to either a dedicated suction line or directly to your skimmer. Suction cleaners are powered by a turbine which is spun by the force of pump’s suction. Suction cleaners are ideal for screened in pools or ones which mainly face sand and dirt with light leaf traffic.
