how does this connect to the filter container mine came off when I was unscrewing the filter from the inlet and outlet pipes

This for both upper and lower. You may also require the Adaptor Kit, 1 1/2"x2" Slip (271096) . All of the parts mentioned are used for the Pentair FNS Plus D.E. Filter.
