The total surface area of the pool must be confirmed; Gallon is used to measure volume while square feet is used to quantify area. 20000 gallons (US)=2673.6 cubic feet. You will need the average depth of the pool (deep end + shallow end / 2= AD) once you know the average depth of the pool. Just divide the volume of the pool by the average depth and you will get the ground coverage area. For example: if the average depth is 3 feet, then ground cover= 2673.6 cubic feet ÷ 3 feet =891.2 square feet.
