How do I know if the Hayward gear box AXV408P needs to be replaced?

Once the gear box is removed from the cleaner you can blow into a small hole on one corner of the box. If you do not hear the gears spinning they are either clogged or bad. If cleaning the gears does not help, the gear box needs to be replaced.

My cleaner just goes around in very slow circles, never even getting to the shallow end of the pool. I am going to replace the pods because the little piece that holds the flapper on is broken on one side. Could this also be the problem.

Hello. That does sound more like the gear box than anything else. Replacing the pods is also a great plan if one of the points that hold the wings on is broken. Please inspect the shoes and wings to see how close they are to their wear lines as well. This will affect it ability as well.

Whenever the vacuum gets to a corner it stops and sits. It doesn't move or rotate to another direction. Does this mean I need a new gear box?

A bad gear box could cause the cleaner not to move out of a corner. Also, check the gears at the top of the cleaner and make sure they are free of debris.
