Gas Pool Heaters
Gas heaters are one of the bigger energy guzzlers in your swimming pool in most areas. If you do not want to purchase a heat pump or use solar heating there are still a few steps you can do to increase your heating efficiency. Below are a few steps to reduce your gas heating costs.
Step 1: Upgrade your pool heater
How old is your pool heater? Older heaters may have a much lower thermal efficiency then the modern pool heaters. Thermal efficiency basically states how much gas is used to heat your pool and how much gas is wasted to heat your pool. For example if you have a heater that has a thermal efficiency of 75% and you have fuel bill of $100. $75 is used towards heating your pool while $25 is wasted to heat your pool. The higher the efficiency the less energy wasted. Below is an average on older model heaters thermal efficiency.

Step 2: Reduce the temperature of your swimming pool.
The average swimming pool temperature is 78 degrees. Reducing the temperature of your swimming pool will also save you money and energy consumption. On average you can save 10% on your energy bill for every 1 degree you reduce on your thermostat. So if you reduce your pool from 82 degrees down to 78 degrees you will save on average 40%. Purchase a good pool thermometer to help measure your temperature of your pool.
Step 3: Keep a lid on your pool
Reduce your energy consumption and bill by up to 80%. A solar blanket not only traps the suns rays to help warm your swimming pool, but it also acts as a lid for your swimming pool. If you have a lid on your pool your water will heat that much faster, keep heat in your pool, and keep water evaporating at a fast rate.
