Chlorine Loss

I have a 22,000 gallon salt pool.  I’ve been noticing that I have a lot of chlorine loss each day.  My cyanauric acid levels are on the lower end of normal (about 40ppm).  I am running my salt cell at 50% for about 12 hours per day.  By my math that should add a little over 1 ppm of chlorine to the pool per day.  I find myself adding about a gallon of concentrated bleach to the pool in the evening.  By the next evening chlorine readings are close to zero again.  The pool is in full sun from about 10 am to 3pm and there are an average of 4 kids per day using the pool for several hours.

Is this chlorine loss normal?  Should I try adding more stabilizer?  It seems my alternatives are to continue adding a gallon of bleach or to run the salt cell longer or at a much higher percentage.  Thanks!

Thank you for contacting Inyo. It is pretty hot this time of year in most places. That along with the constant sun exposure is enough to cause chlorine drop. Then you add people swimming and it is completely normal to see chlorine drop. I would kick up the output percentage to 75% and see if the chlorine level improves.

I wouldn’t add more stabilizer. You are at a good level right now.

Thanks.  The water temperature in the pool has been fluctuating between the high 80s and low 90s recently, so I think you are right, this might be my issue.

You’re welcome. If turning up the chlorinator isn’t quite enough, you can use a chlorine tab floater until the water temperature drops.
