correct flange for 56Y frame pump

I am in need of a square flange for a 56Y frame pump. Could you please advise as to the correct part?

Two questions pertinent to the replacement once I have the part:

  1. How do I remove the flange from the seal? Is it just a matter of pulling hard, or is there a “trick”?

  2. There is a screw toward the middle of the flange. I removed that before removing the flange, thinking I needed to do so. It seems to hold in an oddly-shaped metal piece, but I am not sure how to reattach it, or what its purpose is. What is its purpose and how should I reinstall it?

Thanks in advance.

Hello SATPoolGuy - We’d be glad to assist you. Could you post a picture of the motor label as well as a picture of your current flange?

Thanks. Unfortunately, i won’t have access to the pump until the weekend. I thought all of the 56Y frames used the same flange? If it helps in the interim, it is for this motor purchased from you – B844 (AOSB2844) - 3 HP Motor EE - Full Rate (B2844). It was purchased in September of 2015, so it is pretty disappointing I already need to replace the flange

Unfortunately we do not carry the flange for the B2844. I found your order and noticed that a shaft seal was not purchased. A new shaft seal should always be installed. Not installing a new shaft seal will cause damage to the motor flange as well as damage to the motor internals. Perhaps you bought a shaft seal somewhere else but it must not have been a heavy duty seal. A heavy duty seal would have protected the flange.

We have a guide titled “How to Replace Bearings in a Pool Pump Motor”. It lays out all the steps on opening the motor up. It also references, in Part II, the screw in the middle of the flange. That screw controls the bearing locking clip on the back side of the flange. Steps 8-10 address it.

A new shaft seal was installed, as well as a new seal plate. IIRC, on that particular installation, I used a seal from the official Pentair seal and gasket kit.

Do you know the part number for the flange so I can try to source one elsewhere?

Thanks for the pointer to the video, it sounds like that will answer my question about that piece.

The original Pentair seals are usually considered “general service”. What we recommend is the Ozone/Salt Service seal. These shaft seals consist of more durable construction materials; viton elastomers, carbon primary ring, polished ceramic seal and stainless steel hardware.

We’ll reach out to Century rep and see if we can get a part number. I’ll respond once I have an answer.

The part number for the front flange/service end bracket of the B2844 is part number 18519301. We can special order this item from Century. The cost is $69.99. The lead time is 7-10 days.

Rob, thanks for getting that info – it is much appreciated. Everyone seems to be telling me to replace the entire motor instead of just the flange. What is your opinion? The motor is a little over a year old and has only been used for freeze protection on a limited basis (pool is in Texas, and I haven’t used that water feature in years)

In most cases, the complete motor is the way to go when the flange is bad. When there is a bad flange there are usually issues with the bearings or windings.

Rob – I did end up ordering (and have received, but not yet installed) a whole new motor. Thanks for all of your help.
