Forgot coupling while installing pool pump

Hi there,

I made a stupid mistake while installing our pool pump. I was gluing in the PVC and forgot the coupling on the quick release union. The plumbing is 1.5" with the reducer bushing glued in.

Do you have any suggestions as to what I should do here? (besides slap myself)

Also, is this the correct code number for the adapter slip?
u11-196p, part number 5057-25?

Hello Mschroeder - I’m not aware of anything you can do besides cutting it out and starting over. We’ll help you out and send a replacement union.

There seems to be a lot of 90°s right before the pump. This may impact the performance of the pump. Check out the video below regarding plumbing.

Thank you for the response.

One idea I have is to cut the coupling with a thin razor saw and fit it over the adapter slip. Then cement the cut and reinforce it with an adjustable clamp… Do you think that could be a possibility?

Our pump has never had a problem priming, but here’s a photo of the plumbing… Just off to the left about one foot the pipes take a 90 degree turn down and underground.

In my experience, these lines are under a lot of stress and repairs like that do not usually hold. Do you still want us to send out a replacement union?

Yes, if you could send one out that would really help… Thank you!

The pump union is on the way. You should have it in a few days. Good luck!

Thanks Rob!

I do have one more question… If I cut it out and start over, there isnt any pvc pipe left to work with, just the pipe with the 4 openings. Would I also need to take out all of the valves and start from there?

Based on what I see, it looks like you would need to take out the valves and start over. There isn’t enough room to do anything else.
