Once my pool has achieved the desired hardness, will I create any problems with the water chemistry by maintaining the water level with softened water? If it isn’t a problem to use softened water through the leveler, which type of soft water unit salt regeneration is better for the pool water, NaCl or KCl? I live in AZ, and the water gets hard very quickly in the summer.
Hello RBStone - Maintaining the water level with softened water will not create any problems. As far as a NaCl or KCl system being better, we don’t have a strong opinion either way. One system won’t benefit the pool over the other in any significant way.

InyoRob - Thanks for the quick response. I may have submitted this question twice by mistake. In the second submission I mentioned that I had tried maintaining the water level with softened water a few years back. I can’t remember if I was using KCl or NaCl at that time, but I believe it made the chrome ring around my pool light acquire a black coating. It was easily removed (when I had the pool resurfaced with pebble-tech), but it made me switch back to leveling with hard water. Do you have any idea as to what could have caused the chrome surface to turn black?
The chrome face turning black is usually the sign of electrolysis. You can prevent this by adding a sacrificial zinc anode to the light fixture.
