Hayward Pro Series sand Filter model S180T

Hello, I have a Hayward pro series sand filter (ModelS180T) with a Hayward super pump and I recently changed the sand since it had been 5-7 years and the water pressure was really low. Now my psi level is reading between 20-30 psi when running it at “filter” setting. Idk what to do? We are just now opening the pool for first time as well this year. What can or should I do?

Hi Carlos,

There are a few possible things you can check.

First the gauge may be broken, I would put your hand over the return jet back at the pool and if the water is weak then the gauge is most likely accurate, if the jets are as strong as ever then you may have a broken gauge.

Second you may have a blockage in the plumbing. Put the backwash valve on bypass and see if the jets are stronger on by-pass. If the jets are strong on by-pass but weak on filter then you know the issue is isolated to the filter.

If the issue is somewhere at the filter then you will want to remove the valve to see what’s going on with the filter. Common problems are broken laterals, bad spider gasket at valve, etc… I hope this helps.

Thank You

Patrick

I know the Gauge is good as I got s brand new one about a week ago… I know that the jet pressure is weaker than normal though, so I think that the blockage in plumbing is possibly what is wrong… Would I have to get a plumber out? If is there things I can try to clear it on my own, before having to shell out for a plumber?

Carlos,

I would suggest trying the bypass suggestion from my first post that is something easy you can do and will help to determine if it is a plumbing or filter issue.

Thank You

Patrick

Okay I will try the “bypass” suggestion first, so just to clarify, I’m a pool maintenance newbie, I just need to put the pool on “bypass” setting and let it run for a bit? And if I notice the water pressure from the jets as “weak” then I know it’s the plumbing and will need a plumber? Is that correct?

Yes, that is correct, if the jets are strong on bypass then you know that the issue is most likely back at the filter and if the jets are weak on bypass then the issue is most likely in the plumbing. Let us know how it goes and if you have any additional questions.

Thank You
