Hayward SP2605X7 Replacement

I currently have a 30 year old Hayward SP2605X7 3/4 HP pool pump for an inground 15,000 gallon pool with a Triton II TR 60 sand filter. Pump is wired for 220V and is controlled with an Intermatic timer. Pump is 5’ above pool surface and approx. 30ft. away, pressure at sand filter shows around 7psi. The pool is over 30 years old and only has a single skimmer box. 95% of time the skimmer is connected to an Arneson PoolVac. Over the years this arrangement has maintained the pool very clean. I am planning to replace the complete pump and wonder if I should continue with using direct replacement 3/4HP single speed pump or consider a programmable variable speed pump like the PureLine Prime Variable Speed Pool Pump 1.65 HP - PL2605 to save energy.

My concerns are as follows. 1. Will the higher 1.65 HP potentially cause problems with existing piping due to higher pressure when run at high speed or in the priming cycle. 2. When programmed to run at lower speed to save energy will the PoolVac be less effective at vacuuming and cleaning [maybe doesn’t climb the walls so well].

So direct replacment or go with variable speed?

Thank You in advance for your advice.

Good Day JDHPool2018.

Based on the pump model you have, going with the PureLine Prime Variable Speed Pool Pump 1.65 HP - PL2605 will cause issues like overpowering the filter, creating back pressure etc. when operated at the max RPM. You will also use twice as much energy. Your best option will be to stick with the Super Pump - SP2605X7.

I think your old pump is a medium head. Don’t switch to a high head model.
The new version of your pump is part # MPRA6D-204L.
Optionally you could go with a Pentair SuperFlo (340036) or the Sta-Rite SuperMax (PHK2RA6D-101L). If the budget allows, spring for the SuperFlo variable speed
