HELP! I was replacing my pool return heads and one Broke

I was trying to do the right thing and replace them since it hadn’t been done in years to on eof the new fancy ones and after removing the Head i found the inside portion wouldn’t come out so I was jsut replacing the face plate. Well all was going well until i got to one and the treads broke so there was nothign for the face plate to sit on. I assume the inside part should come out and I have nothing to grip it with.  Any suggestions out there? Can i insert a smaller fitting in side? Saw it out?

A lot of the inside fittings can be removed with a tool. Below you can see a picture of the three components of a return jet. The top piece is what is left in the wall. It can be removed with the tool on the right.
