Looking for recommendation for Variable speed Pool pump

Hi,

I have a 2 pump system for a play pool, no spa and no water feature. One pump for the filtration system and the other for the cleaning system. Both are Century Centurion AO Smith 1hp motors with WhisperFlo WF-4 pumps. The motor for the filtration side died and I’m looking for variable speed motor replacement.

Our pool service is recommending the Hayward Tristar Variable Speed Pump. Is this a good option or is there something better you recommend? Also, is replacing the motor only and keeping the WhisperFlo pump a good option as well? As far as I know, the pump is still good.

Thanks,

Joey

Hello Joey - there are a couple routes you can go. You can keep the housings, and just get a replacement motor, or you can replace the whole pump.

Replacing the motor is the less expensive and less work-intensive option. To replace the motor on a WhisperFlo WF4 and WF24 you would need the AO Smith V-Green ECM16SQU. To complete the motor replacement, you will need a replacement shaft seal. The WhisperFlo Parts Breakdown lists the shaft seal as key 16 or you can use the complete gasket kit listed as the first item on the page.

If you want to replace the whole pump, I would go with the Pentair Intelliflo which would be a drop-in replacement for your Whisperflo. No replumbing or changes would be needed for your PVC replacement. If you are fine with some replumbing, I suggest using the Pureline Prime VS as it has similar flowrates to the WhisperFlo without the high price tag of the IntelliFlo or Tristar.
