Need a new filter

Hi, I have a 12,500 gallon pool in Florida and currently have a DE filter with a failing cover.  It seems the cover costs almost as much as a new filter!  Can you recommend a replacement unit?  2" pvc lines with a second story solar heat system and a 2hp pump.

Hi Mike,

For a 2 HP pump I would suggest the Hayward DE6020 60 Sq. Ft. DE Filter and this 2" Multiport Valve

Thank You

Hi Patrick, in using your calculations it seems that I should have a pump capable of 25gpm.  12,000 gallons.  My current setup as provided by the builder has a 2hp pump with 60 sqft DE filter and has always run about 25-30psi.  I recently went to Leslie pools for chemicals and mentioned this and the Tech was amazed with the pressure?  Before I invest in a new filter I just wanted to make sure I was getting the right system installed.  Is my current pump/filter overkill?  I just want to install the correct size equipment needed to achieve a efficent and cost effect pool.  Please advise.

Hi Mikechie,

Is the pump powering anything else besides the pool, like spa jets, water features, solar, in-floor cleaning, etc..? If not then yes a 2 HP pump does seem like overkill. You do want to make sure your filter can handle the output of the pump, for example, if your pump was outputting 100 GPM then you would not want to pair the pump with a filter that can only handle 50 GPM, this scenario could be causing your high PSI ratings. What was the square footage of your current filter? If you could give me more details on your pool and your old filter that would be helpful.

Thank You

Patrick, I have a spa with four jets, in floor cleaner, solar heater and a 60sq ft DE filter that I think is rated for 90gpm. What should the filter pressure be?  It says 50 psi max.  If I need a new filter I just want the correct size.  The pump is old so this would be the perfect time to get it right.

Hi Mikechie,

The large HP pump does make sense since the pump is also powering a spa with four jets, in floor cleaner and solar heater. Typically a new clean filter will operate around 10-15 PSI as the filter gets dirty the PSI will raise and when you clean your grids the PSI should lower. For my filter the clean PSI is 10 and once it gets to 20 PSI I clean my filter and it drops back down to 10 PSI. If you are unable to get your PSI to drop after cleaning then it may be time for a new filter and the 60 Sq. Ft. Filter by Hayward would be my suggestion for your size pump.

Thank You
