Noob pool question - hose placement

I purchased a home last year with an 18 foot round above ground pool.  I have never had a house that had a pool before, so I am a complete noobie in this area.  The pool had a single speed motor which was horribly inefficient, power wise, and there were some problems with the sand filter unit, so I purchased a new filter and two speed pump.  I was hoping to have the pool functional by Memorial Day, instead of Shrek’s swamp like it is now.   I am planning to put a permanent electrical line in for the pump, but I am still using the old extension cord until I can get the circuit installed.

My problem:  the pool drained overnight to the level of the drain hose outlet.  There are a couple of small leaks with the old hoses, but they aren’t enough that the whole pool would have drained several inches overnight.

I have tried to find information on hose placement, level of pump in relation to the water level, etc., but I can’t find anything with google searches.  Anybody have guidance on hose placement, water level, length of hose, etc?  I did put a 12 foot 1.5 inch hose from the filter to the pool outlet so that I can position the pump next to the place where the new electric circuit will go.  Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Most above ground pool pumps are not self-priming. They are gravity fed. The pump has to be below the skimmer so that it can be gravity fed with water.

There really isn’t a set distance for the hose. The typical hose size for an above ground pool would range from 3’ to 8’. The hose can be longer but at a certain point, a larger HP pump would be required to pull and push the water to the pool.

As far as the water level in the pool, it should be halfway up the skimmer door opening.
