Pool Pump Issue/Replacement

Our 220v pool pump is now making our breaker switch turn off. When I reset the breaker, the pump will only turn on for 5 seconds before shutting the breaker off again. An electrian has verified my break and pool timer is fine.

Upon looking at the pump, he discovered the Capacitor had blown the bottom cap out creating a gap. He told me to replace the capacitor. I switched out the capacitor and it blew out within seconds. I have tried 3 capacitors total to ensure I did not purchase a faulty item and now am lead to the conclusion that my pool pump needs to be replaced.

I have verified that there are no clogs in the system, and had it converted to 110v to test the following week. It runs fine on 110v but weakly pumping. Converting it back to 220v instantly shuts off the breaker or blows the capacitor.

So I am looking for two options. Perhaps there is an issue before my pump that we missed? Or do all the details immediatel lead to a bad pump? I just do not want to replace the pump just for it to malfunction.

I have a AO-Smith-K48L2N104 and would like to verify a replacement pump if needed.

Hi Martin,

Based on your explanation I would suggest replacing your pump. From your motor information, I would suggest the PureLine Prime 1.5 HP Pump I really like this pump as it uses a high-quality Century motor and the pricing is very good. The reason I suggest going with the 1.5 HP vs. the 1 HP you currently have is that your current motor is a Full Rate motor and the Prime Pump uses an Up Rate motor. A 1.5 HP up rate motor is identical to a 1 HP full rated motor as the service factor on the full rate motor is higher giving the two pumps the same True HP, it is easiest to see this by showing the math…

1.5 HP Up Rated x 1.0 Service Factor = 1.5 True HP

1 HP Full Rated x 1.5 Service Factor = 1.5 True HP

Thank You

Hi, I replaced my single speed motor with a Century VS model a week ago… Now the motor trips the breaker but not at any certain time in the cycle. Sometimes it runs for 8-10 hours and other times it only runs for 30-45 minutes. The single speed motor had never tripped the breaker. Any ideas??

We’d be glad to assist you. It’s possible that the breaker needs to be replaced.

It looks like you ordered the 1.65HP variable speed motor. What was the part number of your single speed motor?
