pool pump replacement - in ground pool

Am probably looking to replace my UST 1072, 3/4 HP pump with a new one.  the pressure in my paper filter chamber is about 25 psi and flow only increased (minimally) when i clean the paper filter (daily, and the filter is not even really that dirty).  Am curious if I am able to replace with a 1HP or 1.5 HP.  if so, are there any other internal components which need to be changed or upgraded and is there any benefit to replacing with a larger pump or stay with the 3/4?    should i consider replacing the impeller and diffuser first before replacing the entire pump?    thanks.

Hello Safetypro - Has the starting psi always been at 25? That might be normal for your pool but that is high for a lot of pool systems.

Try taking the cartridge out of the filter. Place the lid back on the filter and run the system without the cartridge. The flow should improve. If it does, the cartridge may need to be soaked in a filter cleaner or replaced.

Let us know if it doesn’t improve and we’ll go from there.

it normally runs around 12 to 15 psi.  i replaced the filter maybe 3 weeks ago and the pressure improved, but i had a water leak under my pump and the local shop said to replace the ceramic part and other associated components (leak seal kit) and i did so… the leak stopped, but the pressure increased and pool flow/suction has decreased significantly.  i took apart the pump housing again last night to look at the diffuser and impeller and there is no sign of wear or debris.  i did notice that the gaskets provided in the seal kit were slightly larger than the ones i removed (they still fit, but extended beyond the surface).  i put silicone on each, but no improvement in flow.  the flow improves and pressure decreases when i clean the filter each day, but i can usually go 3 or more days between rinsing the filter before the pressure increases.  there is a small air bubble inside the pump basket that normally isn’t there and no bubbles coming out of the return port next to the skimmer opening… i’m at a loss (obviously) as to what to do next…

oh… and i did take out the filter and run without the cartridge…filter pressure was about 15 psi… still higher than usual… flow did improve.

am using

Hayward CX1100RE Replacement Cartridge Element

Increasing the HP will only drive the PSI rating up. You have other issues that need to be addressed. The cartridge might look clean but it could be clogged up with oils or other fine debris. How old is the cartridge? Is the pool water clear?

cartridge is less than 1 month old.   pool water is clear and chemical test is normal.

motor is approx 5 years old.  think i should consider replacing with like kind and new internal components?

Yes. I wouldn’t go up in HP because the 3/4HP was working fine until it was rebuilt.

what else do i need to consider and plan to replace with the motor?

When you replace the motor, replace the seals. Also, soak the cartridge in a filter cleaner.
