Pump issue

Through InYo this year I replaced my pump and top mount sand filter.  After installation the pump suction was poor with the water level in the pump barely covering the basket and not filling to the top of the see-through cover as it did before replacement.  This caused poor suction at the pool skimmer which didn’t provide enough suction to vacuum the poor when on filtration.  Plenty of suction in waste mode (including backwash and rinse) which means there is no obstruction in the line.  What could be wrong with the filter that is causing the pump not to fill up generating the correct amount of suction for vacuuming and proper filtration; psi is high at 31.

thank you, Mark

Hi Mark,

Could you post a few photo’s of your equipment set up and plumbing directly to this thread as this will help us troubleshoot your issue.

From markhosking Here’s my set up…

Hi Mark,

The main issue is going to be all of your 90’s and turns, especially the u shapped fitting in front of the pump. Every 90 you have is going to cut down on your flow. I really think you will need to do a bit of re-plumbing to try and eliminate as many 90’s as possible both on the intake side and the discharge side. Even if you go with two 45’s in place of a 90 you will be in better shape than a single 90. I hope this helps, if you have any questions please let us know.

From markhosking changed the flow configuration to this and the water still only came up to the basket level. I decided to backwash and when I returned to filter the water level was full to the top of the glass; yea. While I haven’t vacuumed the pool yet I’m assuming I have full suction given the water level in the pump. Thank you for your help. One more question, my psi is 31 which from what I have read is high but that all systems are different. Since it’s a brand new pump, filter, and sand should I have any concerns with a 31 psi? Can it be lowered and if so how? Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark,

That is great news about the flow! As far as the pressure goes yes 31 PSI is quite high. We have a Guide on How to Reduce Pressure In a Pool Filter which you may find helpful.

Thanks

Patrick

From Mark

Patrick,I watch the recommended How To Guide and dropped the pressure 8 psi by making one change, so thank you for the recommendation.  My pool is now crystal clear which made everyone happy at last weekends pool party.  I received an email from INYO saying my issue was still showing as unresolved and since I don’t see anything I can click on to note otherwise I’m assuming it comes from your end.  Please note that my issue has been resolved and thank you again for your assistance.  After 16 years as a pool owner it appears one always has something to learn.Mark

Thanks Mark that is great news, I will mark your issue as resolved. By the way what change did you make to drop the PSI?

I have a low pressure with my pump pump.  I have a Hayward Model # SPX3210X15Z2PE, which comes up on your website has a Power End 1 1/2Hp, Max Star 2 speed pump.  I followed several of your recommendations.  I did discover that one of my strainers was clogged up.  I emptied it, but it still did not give me any relief.  I tried cleaning the propeller with the hanger, but I was unable to find any debris in the propeller.  I also cleaned the cartridges.  I did not know what the chemical that you recommended, but the cartridges do not have any debris on them.  I read somewhere where the pressure gauge might need to be replaced.  I really do not think that could cause this issue.  How do I clear the strainer line since I know that I had alot of debris in one of the strainers?  I used a wooden stick and some debris came out, but I do not believe that it is all of the debris.  i also noticed by the pump when I was cleaning the propeller that a rubber O - ring seem to be loose.  I pushed it back in with the hanger, but it was loose before I pulled out the hanger.  Two of the returns have no water coming out of them at the far end of the pool.  We were in the teens last week for awhile, but my pump automatically comes on so I do not believe that anything froze.  Do you have any suggestions on what to do next?

Hello Michael - Sorry to hear about your problems. Check out Part 1 of our article titled “Why are My Pool Jets Not Working?”. It covers a wide variety of possible causes.

I have a jucuzzi de 40 filter. The pressure goes up but the flow slows down after just a few minutes. I changed the grids and bought a new motor. Still no good. Any ideas. ??
