Pump leaking at outflow couple

I have a Hayward 2.5hp Star Pump that is leaking where the couple is attached to the outflow side. I guess that would be the pressure side. I replaced the seal hoping that was all it was, but it still leaks. It is coming from underneath the couple around the threads on the pump housing. Not on top of the couple. So I’m thinking that the problem isn’t the couple, but the pump housing.

Any suggestions on how to determine where the leak is coming from and how to solve that? I’m thinking the only way would be to replace the pump. It is 6 years old. If there is something that would be easier and cheaper I would love to hear it.

Thanks,

Brad

Hi Brad,

Could you post a few photos of your pump and the leak? If the threads on the pump housing got stripped then the pump housing would need to be replaced, you stated a Hayward Star Pump but I’m thinking this is a Hayward Super Pump or maybe its a Hayward Tristar or Northstar? If its a Super Pump then here is the Hayward Super Pump Housing with 1.5" Ports and here is the Hayward Super Pump with 2" Ports. Here is the Hayward Tristar Pump Housing

It is a Tristar, but after doing some research I found that this is a common problem with many others experiencing the exact same leak. I was able to find a deal on a new pump housing. So we’ll see how long this one lasts before it springs a leak.

Best of luck with the new housing, let us know how it goes.
