How long should a salt generator run? I have the Aquarite by Hayward… just installed this year… when I checked to see the salt level of the pool it showed a -0. Did a test strip and the Chlorine level was 10. I have turned the generator off currently. The generator has been running 24x7 for the past couple of weeks. I had the generator set for 40%

You will want to aim for 3 PPM of chlorine. Are you running your pump 24 hrs. per day? If so then you will want to set your chlorine output to a lower setting as the salt system will be on when the pump is running. We normally suggest running your pump 8 hours per day and if you take this advice you will set you salt system to a higher setting as the salt chlorine generator will only be operating during the 8 hours when the pump is on. Normally if you are running your pump 8 hours per day I suggest starting at 50% and then testing your water after a few days and if you are above 3 PPM of chlorine then dial the salt system down and re-test, keep doing this until you get the salt system at a setting that keeps your pool consistently at 3 ppm of chlorine.
One last clarification when you set your salt system to 50% then the salt system will be producing chlorine 50% out of the hour in which your pump is running. So if you have your system set at 50% and you run your pump 24 hours per day then the salt system will be producing chlorine for 12 hours out of the day and if you have your system set at 50% and you run your pump 8 hours per day then the salt system will be producing chlorine for 4 hours out of the day.
