Sizing a Cartridge Filter to replace a Sand Filter

The fiberglass tank on my Pentair Targelus TA50 sand filter ruptured during the winter storm in Texas.  I thought it was drained, but I was wrong.  In any case, I’m looking to replace it with a cartridge filter.  The inground pool is only about 7500 gallons.  The pump is a StaRite DuraGlas.  The moter was replaced with a vGreen 1.65hp variable speed motor about 2 years ago.  I plan to switch to saltwater in the next years.  The Targelus filter was rated at 50GPM.  Do I select a cartridge filter rated at 50GPM, or should I go larger?  If I go larger, then would 100GPM be too large?  Thanks…

If your old pool filter was rated at 50 GPM then you should be good to replace it with another 50GPM pool filter.  I typically recommend sticking with the same size filter if you are sticking with the same size pump.  You can increase the size of your filter to help clean your swimming pool a bit more, but you just need to make sure your pump will work with that filter.  Your pump GPM will vary depending on the feet of the head you have in your pool.  The performance curve of the pump will be found on the description page of the pump.

Hi Choven,

Typically you cant go too larger on the filter, you will just get more filtering capacity meaning more time between cleanings. I would suggest this Waterway 100 Sq. Ft. Filter as a good replacement for your TA50.
