so I have an 18 round above ground pool and a pentair clean and clear 75. The turnover rate for 8 hours is 36000 gallons. So doing these calculators for and 18 round it would turnover just under 2 hours. So do I actually only turn over for 2 hours or am I missing something?
The old rule of thumb is to turn the body of water over once a day. If that can be done in 2 hours, so be it. If the pool stays clear and the chemical levels remain consistent, keep it at 2 hours. If not, increase the run time.
Thanks, InyoRob, but I’ve been unable to find any support for the “old rule of thumb” of once a day, or local “industry standard” of two or three times a day–I guess there are two different local industry standards. Why, please, should I size for once a day, or two or three times a day, or two or three times a month? Seems like it ought to be a function of measured turbidity, which could be automated, but is their any research justifying any turnover rate?

There isn’t an official requirement for daily turnover rates in residential pools. There are codes that address the speeds at which the pool can turnover in a certain time period. The most recent Florida code I could find mandated that the pool filtration speed should not turn the water over in less than 6 hours. That code was geared towards energy efficiency standards.
I would suggest searching for your local law and code requirements if you really want to know more.
