What would be a good VS pump motor for retrofitting my challenger 1hp pump to Variable Speed?
I would also potentially be interested in a 2speed if it included a timer or easy way to manage.
Suggestions?

Do you know the service factor on your Challenger pump, this should be listed as SF on your motor label.
This would be a good choice for a Variable Speed Motor for the Pentair Challenger
This would be a good choice for a Dual Speed Motor for the Pentair Challenger this motor includes a digital controller which makes it pretty easy to install and control.
