Step by Step

Top

Step 1

Stop pump and release all pressure from system.

Step 2

Place the selector handle at the "winterize" position (this lifts the plug off the seat).

Step 3

Remove the bolts and nuts holding the cover to the valve body. Remove the cover assembly.

Step 4

Remove the old gasket from the valve cover assembly. If the gasket is glued in, you may have to scrape it out with a small screwdriver to get most of it out. Be care that you do not score the plastic groves.

Step 5

Make sure that the gasket groove is free of water, grease, oils, debris and parts of the old gasket. Use NON-acetone finger nail polish remover to remove any gasket residue. Make sure the remover is NON-acetone or it will melt the plastic. Please note that not all multiport valve gaskets are glued in. If the gasket on your valve isn't glued, you would bypass Step #6.

Step 6

NOTICE: Once this step is started, continue through Step 10 without interruption. Using an Adhesive For Valve Seat Gasket apply glue sparingly (a bead about 1/16" wide) to the bottom only (not the sides) of the spider groove in the valve body. The glue lines must be continuous and intersect at the intersections of the grooves.

Step 7

Insert the new gasket into the groove with the rounded bead up. Press the gasket firmly into all groove areas to seat the new gasket evenly.

Step 8

Align the tab on the cover assembly with pin on the valve body, fastening it with the bolts and nuts removed in Step 3. Tighten all bolts evenly.

Step 9

Depress the valve handle and rotate it to the closest standard position (FILTER or RINSE), being careful not to rub the plug on the new gasket. Release the handle, allowing the plug to hold the gasket in place while curing.

Step 10

The minimum cure time is 2 hours. Curing for 24 hours is recommended for full strength.

Removing the gasket from its seating is very difficult. It is glued in and breaks up when I try to pull it out. Any tricks I might try? Is there a suitable solvent.

duke - From your description it looks like you have a Jacuzzi 6 Way valve. The spider valve for this valve is pn 4628-13. Check its dimensions - outer diameter should be 5 3/8', inner diameter 7/8". Unfortunately you cannot buy the spider gasket separately. It comes pre-glued to the diverter.

gman - Yes, after you have placed the spider gasket into its groove, I would lubricate the top surface of the gasket.

Iscrewedup - You may have a blown spider valve. I would check that first.

So today I was back washing my pool and forgot to turn the main pool water return valve back on when I was finished. Unfortunately I left my pump on so now, even though I have set the filter to filter, I am losing a significant amount of water through my waste valve. I'm assuming this is because I had the return valve off so the water pressure built up and ruined something in my valve??

My question is: did I ruin my multi port valve and need to replace it or did I ruin the spider gasket? Have to figure this out soon! My pool will quickly turn into a lake if we can't filter!

basingers - Put the smooth / flat side down; the ridge / rounded side up.

I am replacing the spider gasket on my pool's multiport filter valve. I must glue the gasket in. I noticed one side of the gasket is smooth; the other side has a ridge. Which way is up... or rather, which side is glued to the top mount body?

ParvinT - For a Jacuzzi 7 Multiport valve: the valve cover has 2 small tabs which are different in shape.
One of them has both sides curved and the other has a flat side. The valve body has the same set up, so you very easily tell how the cover mounts. The trick is to get the handle on correctly. When the cover goes on, the “Filter” setting on the cover will be pointing toward the “Return” port on the body.
When you put the handle back on, point the handle toward the “Filter” position on the cover.
With the handle pointing toward filter, the single hole in the diverter should be directly under the “Test” position on the label.

Does anyone know the postion of the opening on a 7 multiport valve. When I put my replacement valve in an the handle is in the filter position the opening is 2 spaces to the left. Is this correct?

ParvinT - If you can backwash and drain without a problem, it sounds like you have replaced the part correctly. I would check the spider gasket again and see if is seated properly all around. And be sure to have the pump off where you change valve positions or you can damage the gasket.

I replace the Jacuzzi 7 dial valve replacement parts and handle. After I let my pool run for 45 mins it starts a light leak through my drain. what do I do and how do I know if I replaced the part correct to the position. I can backwash and drain without any problems?

Guy - If you haven't yet, replace your spider gasket before you buy a new valve. It is the most common cause of misdirected water.

I been losing all my water to the skimmer level everyday. I disconnected my drain pipe with the pump running with the selector switch in normal position and lots of water was running out the waste pipe. Bad switch or something. I am going to take my cap off the selector switch and try and see what went wrong. Might need a new selector switch for my pump bummer

I had to replace my spider gaset cause after I back washed the water was still running out of the backwash side

Leo - Unless I'm missing something it sounds like your problem is a leak above the bottom screw of your skimmer, either in around the skimmer seal or in the top part of the lining. If it were the spider gasket, the water lose would not stop at the same point. I'd check for leaks around the skimmer - try tightening the mounting screws.

I am having to refill my in ground pool every 2-3 days. It looses 4/5 inches. It does not go lower than the first screw (from the bottom) out of the three screws on my two skimmers. I was told it was my spider gasket. What else could be wrong.

mrm - Your new sand may need to be cleaned of small sand particles. To do this run the filter in backwash position for a while until you don't feel grit in the waste water. Then run Rinse for 1 min and switch back to filter.

Water recently started leaking from backwash line on our Jacuzzi 160L when handle was in filter position. Removed nuts & bolts & took off top section of multiport valve assembly. Found worn white spider gasket. Rigged a temporary fix with carefully applied "flex seal"(as seen on tv!haha). Looked online for replacement spider gasket. They only want to sell the whole assembly as a repair "kit". But our handle, spring, etc is just fine. I just want to dig that worn gasket out of the diverter and glue a nice new one in! Wish I had measured for the exact dimensions of that gasket before we put it all back together, but I didn't. Didn't know I would need to. It's not leaking now, but I don't want to disturb my temporary fix until I have a replacement gasket to put in. So...can someone please tell me exactly which spider gasket I will need or give me the measurements so I can order just the gasket? It's the 6 position valve for the Jacuzzi 160L Laser Sand Filter. Thanks so much! Amy

We are getting sand in the pool. also seeing it in the bottom of the pot and can feel it in the valves when open/close the main drain and skimmer lines. In fact, I cant even close the main drain valve and feel that it is due to sand build up. I also feel that the multiport valve is harder to turn and feels like there could be sand there as well. We just took out all sand and checked laterals, but none are busted. Help, please!! And thank you in advance for any assistance you can give us.

renee - The spider gasket is the first thing I would check in this case. Also make sure your handle spring is not weak or broken. If you have any cracks in the valve body itself, you will need to buy a new valve.

My Hayward sand filter is leaking bad out the backwash side what time the pool is on filter. Would it be a spider gasket? Please need help the pool place is trying to sale me a whole new filter and no money to buy a new one.

bevo - I have heard that there are some mislabeled valves out there. If you just installed a new valve without taking it apart, you may well have a mislabeled valve. If you have a local pool store nearby that sells your valve, take a look at it and see how the label lines up with a bottom port (waste or return).

Put on a whole new valve set up. Pool wouldn't run in "filter" position (instead it shot water out of the waste hose). for no particular reason I wanted to see what would happen at different settings so I put the dial on "rinse". Then the pool ran fine!
Could this have been mislabled or have I really screwed something up?

Small Multiport leak - I don't think this would affect you suction pressure to that extent. Check for leaks on the suction side, including holes in your vacuum hose.

New to pools - The spider gasket is the first thing I'd check. Also did you leave at least 6" of space between the top of the sand and the bottom of the multiport valve? And when you had the sand out, did you check the laterals at the bottom of the standpipe? These are fragile and break with age. You may be getting sand through a broken lateral.

Just replaced the sand in my Hayward above ground filter. Prior home owner had play sand in it. I replaced it with Quickcrete Pool Sand filter, now in the backwash position the sand comes out with the water. A lot, 3 cups in about a minute. Could this mean the spider gasket needs to replaced.

if multiport is leaking a little dribble from one screw will this cause air bubbles in sand filter and pump filter when hooking up krepper crawler we loose pressure suction

Sueluma - Pre-glued gaskets come in the upper valve assemble which requires you replace that whole assembly minus the handle assembly.

"cure time" - Do not use the filter for 24 hours.

How do I install the pre-glued gasket?

When you say "cure time of 24 hrs", does that mean not to move the handle on the valve? or not to use the filter for 24 hrs?

Pool Mom - Replacing the spider gasket is the most common solution for this problem. Also check that your handle spring is not weak or broken. A bad spring will not put enough pressure to seal the spider gasket. Be sure to turn off the pump each time you change your valve setting.

steve - If alcohol doesn't work, try Goof Off. Do not leave it on the plastic for long or it may damage the plastic.

My pool was shooting water out the back during filtering and pumping sand in the pool too. That's why we are replacing our spider gasket. Was advised by filter rep that would be the reason. If j pool finds another reason would you please post?

InyoPools Product Specialist  Posted: 5/31/2012

j pool - Most valve top assemblies cannot be put on wrong. They generally have six tabs to line up the assembly and one is different than the other 5. I would check your spider valve again to make sure it is set properly. Make sure you turn off the pump whenever you change the valve setting. If you don't, the water can blow out the gasket.
