How do u control the speed? Does it have a switch?

Hi Ronnie, This pump does not have a switch so you would have to connect it to a Dual Speed Timer (T106R) to alternate speed.

I have a pool that is 8ft deep and my current pump pulls water from the bottom and the skimmer then feeds it into a sand filter before the water is returned to the pool. The pool is about 17,000 gallons. Will this motor be a sufficient replacement?

If this pump's gallons per minute rating falls in line with the gallons per minute rating that your filter can handle then yes it would be sufficient. Please refer to the pump curve on this pump's page on our site.
