The pump will switch on at approximately 2 - 1/4" of water.

Hello, I provided a link to the Water Wizard Cover Pump manual. On page two, there is a list of troubleshooting issues and remedies that may assist you in resolving your pump not working. There can be a number of problems, from a blown fuse to a tripped GFCI outlet, that can be causing the motor to not come on.

Second time. Can the pump be left in place during an extended cold period? If the surface water freezes, will it damage the pump?

Hello, If the pump is left in place for an extended period of time in freezing temps, it will likely get damaged.

Are there any pool cover pumps that can remain on the pool all winter long e.g. freezing temps, with ice /snow conditions and automatically remove water ?. Thank you

Hi, fxkowalski. Unfortunately, we do not carry or seen a pump that can be permanently installed or be used in such weather conditions.
