Pump sizing

Hi, I have a new 3hp pentair vs. Have had a few pool persons by to give a quote on a new liner and one of them said my pump was too big and would blow up if I installed it.

My pool is 20000 gal with one 1.5 inch return. I am going to tie in my old pressure line, 1 inch, from the pool sweeper.

Question is…should I get a 1.5 hp pump or am I ok with this 3hp?

Thanks

I would agree that the 3 HP is too large but with a variable speed pump you could just run at a lower RPM resulting in a lower HP. If you have not installed the pump yet then I would suggest returning the 3 HP pump and going with the PureLine Prime 1.65 Variable Speed Pump

Thank You

Patrick

Hi Riverview,

If we were just speaking of the pump to power your pool then yes you could get by with a much smaller HP than a 2 HP pump. But since you need the power for the waterfall you need a larger HP, but by having this larger HP you are paying a fortune to operate the pump for the pool. My suggestion would be to go to a 2.7 HP PureLine Prime Variable Speed Pump. This pump would allow you to dial the HP down to .75 HP for general pool filtration and then dial it up to a higher HP when you want to run the waterfall. The 2.7 HP variable speed pump can be dialed into any HP between .75 HP and 2.7 HP. Since 95% of the time your pump is running the main pool filtration you will save a ton on your operational costs probably 75% as you will be only paying to run a 3/4 HP pump and not a 2 HP pump. Another option would be the PL2605 1.65 HP PureLine Prime Variable Speed Pump which can be dialed down to .5 HP and can be dialed up to 1.65 HP. The plus to the 1.65 HP pump is that you can run it at an even lower HP to save more money on operation costs and the pump is $200 less than the 2.7 HP. The downside is that the max HP is 1.65 so you would be taking a risk that 1.65 HP could adequately power the 10’ waterfall. I hope this helps. Also, we would love to see some photos of the waterfall!
