If you have any leaks around your Hayward Multiport Valve (MPV) or the handle won't rotate, chances are you have an issue with the Key Cover and Handle Assembly on top of the MPV. This Assembly can have a number of problems including a bad spider gasket, a weak or broken spring, a broken bearing washer, a broken handle, worn O-rings or a cracked assembly body. Many of these problems can be corrected individually without having to replace the whole Assembly, but if your MPV is old and everything is starting failing, you may want to replace the whole assembly.  This guide shows you how to replace the entire Key Cover and Handle Assembly on a Hayward filter.

Step 1

TURN OFF POWER TO PUMP - Turn off all power to the pump at the breaker box. You don"t want the pump accidentally turning on when you have the MPV open.

Step 2

REMOVE HOLDING SCREWS - Your first step is to remove the 6 screws that secure the Key Cover and Handle Assembly to the Valve Body.

Step 3

LIFT OUT ASSEMBLY - Once the 6 screws are removed, lift the Assembly out of the Valve Body.

Step 4

CLEAN OUT VALVE BODY - Clean any debris out of the Valve Body. Pay extra attention to cleaning the surface that the Assembly O-ring rests against when the new Assembly is inserted.

Step 5

LUBRICATE O-RING - Check the new O-ring for any damage and lubricate it a with silicon or Teflon lubricant.

Step 6

LINE UP NOTCH WITH TAB - Look for a notch in the outer ring of the Assembly and a tab on the outer ring of the Valve Body. These should be aligned when you insert the Assembly to ensure that the Assembly is inserted correctly.

Step 7

INSERT NEW ASSEMBLY - With the Assembly properly aligned, Insert the Assembly into the Valve Body and press it down

Step 8

REPLACE HOLDING SCREWS - Replace the 6 screws to secure the Assembly to the Valve Body.

Step 9

ASSEMBLY REPLACE IS COMPLETE - You have successfully replaced your Hayward Key Cover and Handle Assembly. If you have any other questions, feel free to call us at 407-834-2200 or visit us at Inyopools.com

The correct replacement for the SP714 valve is the SPX0714BA Upper Handle Assembly for Hayward SP0714T Valve - PL0734
