Pool pumps are wired to run on either 230V or 115V. Most are run on 230V and are preset at the manufacturers at 230V. If you are going to wire your own pool pump, you must first know what voltage is coming to your pump from the house circuit breaker. Also you must ensure that the electrical supply agrees with the motor's voltage, phase, and cycle and that all electrical wiring conforms to local codes and NEC regulations. If you are unsure of this voltage or are unfamiliar with electrical codes and regulations, have a professional electrician wire your pump for you or at least check your work. Failure to wire the pump correctly can cause electrical shock or can damage your pump motor and void your warranty.

Things You'll Need

Step 1

CAUTION: Before you start wiring your pool pump, turn off all power to the pump at the breaker box.

Step 2

Remove the two screws from the plate at the back of the motor. Set the plate and foam gasket to the side.

Step 3

Locate the internal orange motor wire on terminal A. Using needle nose pliers, gently pull the orange wire away from terminal A.

Step 4

Move the orange motor line from terminal A to terminal B.

Step 5

Locate the internal white motor wire on terminal A. Using needle nose pliers, gently pull the white wire away from terminal A.

Step 6

Move the white motor line from terminal A to terminal L2.

Step 7

Remove the plug from the conduit hole.

Step 8

Feed the 3 external wires through the conduit hole. Typically, the 3 external lines will be black, white and ground. These represent the hot, neutral and ground respectively.

Step 9

Connect the black (hot) line to terminal L1.

Step 10

Connect the white (neutral) line to terminal L2. Note: The internal white line was moved so that we could cleary show the connection of the external white line line. Both white lines should be connected to L2.

Step 11

Connect the green (ground) line to the green screw.

Step 12

Place foam gasket and plate on the back of the motor and tighten the two screws.

Step 13

Attach the bonding wire to the motor's bonding lug. The bonding wire will either be exposed copper or a copper wire with a green sleeve. This line should already be installed at the pool if the pool was properly bonded.

Step 14

Finally, prime the pump and turn on the power at the breaker.
