How To Program a Century Variable Speed Motor

This guide provides an overview of the steps and features involved in programming a Century/A.O.Smith Variable Speed Motor, V-Green. You will find that V-Green is one of the simplest Variable Speed Motors to program. More detailed instructions are provided in the V-Green User's Manual.

Step 1

User Interface Operation - This is a picture of the V-Green Controller that is mounted on the top of the motor. The major controls and displays are highlighted: 1- Display Screen, 2- LED Lights (power ON & Fault), 3- Back Button, 4-Navigation Buttons, 5- Selector Knob, and 6- Override Buttons. The balance of this guide explains how to program and set up the basic features of this motor using these controls.

CONTROLLER SELECTOR KNOB - This is a closer look at the V-GREEN Controller Knob. Options are: SET CLOCK; SET SCHEDULE /STEP1 /STEP2 /STEP3; SERVICES; SETUP; RUN; and OFF

SET CLOCK - When the Controller is first turned on, the clock must be set to current time. Set the Selector Knob to "SET CLOCK" and set the time using the Navigation Buttons - press the arrows to move to the clock unit (Day, Year, Hour, Minute or AM/PM - use the +/- buttons to change each clock unit. Push SET to save clock settings.

Step 4

SET SCHEDULE - You can set up to 3 speeds/times on this motor. Move the Selector Knob to Step1 within the SET SCHEDULE. Press SET in the middle of the Navigator Buttons to initiate this process. The SPEED setting will flash. Change the SPEED in increments of 25 RPM with the +/- buttons. Press the right arrow to set START TIME (HOURS) using +/-buttons. In like manner, use the right arrow and +/- buttons to set START TIME (MINUTES and AM/PM). Repeat process for STOP TIME. Press SET to save STEP1 of Schedule. Move Selector Knob to STEP 2 repeat for second Speed/Time setting. Move Selector Knob to STEP 3 and repeat for third Speed/Time setting.

SETUP - Setup allows the user to configure the motor for a number of safety and control conditions and described below.

SETUP/FREEZE PROTECTION - When enabled, FREEZE PROTECTION allows the user to set the temperature at which the pump will turn on to prevent freezing. If the outside temperature drops below the setpoint, the pump will turn on and run for 8 hours at 2600 RPM and repeat as necessary. To enable, set the Selector Knob to Setup and use +/- to change settings.

Step 7

SETUP/AUXILIARY LOAD - The AUXILIARY LOAD provides an option for controlling power to an outside feature (i.e. heater, booster pump, and salt water chlorinator). The AUXILIARY LOAD is a relay inside the Controller that can be set to only activate between above a user defined minimum RPM values and for a specified amount of time. These settings will ensure that the external feature only operates with adequate water flow. To set the AUXILIARY LOAD function: rotate the Selector Knob to SETUP; press the right arrow to move to AUXILIARY LOAD settings; press SET to enter change mode; press +/- to change the Minimum Speed; press the right arrow to move to Maximum Run Time; press +/- to change the Maximum Run Time; press SET to save changes.

SETUP/PRIME CONFIGURATION - When the motor first comes on, it must go through a priming cycle. This menu allows the user to specify the priming speed and time. The minimum priming speed is 1500 RPM. The maximum priming speed is 10 minutes. To set the PRIME CONFIGURATION values: rotate the Selector Knob to SETUP; press the right arrow 2 times to access the PRIME CONFIGURATION menu; press SET to enter change mode; press +/- to change the Prime Speed; press the right arrow to change the Prime Time; press +/- to change the Prime Time; press SET to save changes.

SETUP/SET CONTRAST - This menu allows the user to change the contrast of the LCD screen. To set the CONTRAST level; rotate the Selector Knob to SETUP; press the right arrow 4 times to access the SET CONTRAST menu; press +/- to adjust the CONTRAST level; press SET to save the setting.

Step 10

RUN/OVERRIDE HIGH - The V-Green motor has two override buttons to temporarily run at a higher 9or lower) speed between 600 and 3450 RPM. OVERRIDE HIGH is used for high flow requirements such as a pool heater startup, backflushing, suction cleaning or any other operation that requires high water flow above the daily operating schedule. To change the OVERRIDE HIGH settings; rotate the Selector Knob to RUN; push the OVERRIDE (HIGH) button; press SET to enter the OVERRIDE HIGH change mode; press +/- to adjust the OVERRIDE HIGH speed in increments of 25 RPM; press SET to save the speed and move to Duration Time; press +/- to adjust the OVERRIDE HIGH Duration Time (max 24 hours, min 1/2 hour; press SET to save OVERRIDE HIGH Duration Time. Once the OVERRIDE is completed, the motor will automatically return to the programmed schedule.

Step 11

RUN/OVERRIDE LOW - OVERRIDE LOW is used for low circulation requirements that exist outside the daily operation schedule. To change the OVERRIDE LOW speed and duration time settings; rotate the Selector Knob to RUN; push the OVERRIDE (HIGH) button; follow the change sequence outlined above for the OVERRIDE HIGH function. Once the OVERRIDE is completed, the motor will automatically return to the programmed schedule.

Step 12

RUN - After the user has completed entering his program values, he will rotate the Selector Knob to RUN to implement his program. With the Selection Knob in the RUN mode the display screen will show the following information: Current Clock Time, Event in Process, RPM, Remaining Time, % Energy Level and Current Watts being used.
