I have an 18,000 gallon pool. Originally, it had a Hayward TriStar 1.5HP, that was replaced with a Hayward RS 1.0HP. Additionally, there is a Polaris 280 with 0.75HP booster, which powers the cleaner as well as two Polaris Sheer Descent waterfalls. The pool does fine with this setup, even with the reduction in HP of the original circulatory pump, which is now failing. Will this pump be suitable in my application? Will this pump at full power eliminate the need for the booster pump?
 Reply

A  Answered on 5/30/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Dennis A. The Polaris 280 requires a Booster Pump, however, this pump will be able to operate the two Polaris Sheer Descent waterfalls. If you replace the Polaris 280 with the Polaris 360, then you will be able to eliminate the booster pump.

Ok, thanks for your response. I will be placing my order soon. Will probably just hold off on the Polaris until the booster pump fails completely. One more question; I currently use a dual Intermatic timer box with freeze protection. Does this pump have freeze protection, or will I need to continue using the external timer setup that I currently have?

Yes this pump does have a freeze protection feature built into the controller.

Hi, Arthur. Your options are the Prime Pump 1.65 VSP - PL2605, Super Pump VSP - SP2603VSP or the SuperFlo VSP - 342001 are suitable replacement variable speed pumps.

We had a Hayward TriStar VS Pump Model #SP3202VSPND, that has had the motor go out in it. We have recently been told they have discontinued the pump we had. We need to replace it with something that will interface with our existing ProLogic System, will this pump be able to be hooked up and interface correctly without having to replace anything else?

Hi. This Hayward TriStar VS Pump - SP3202VSP will interface with your existing ProLogic system just as the SP3202VSPND model did.

I have a shaft seal leak on a 1 HP, Pentair single speed pump. I have several questions about this. 1. Should I repair or replace with a new variable speed pump ? 2. Should I stay Pentair or switch to Hayward or even to Jandy ? 3. The pool is a salt pool, about 12,000 gallons. I was told that variable speed pumps can also increase the life of your salt cell ?? Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob, If it were me I would replace with a variable speed motor and keep your Pentair pump housing. Typically a Pentair pump will use the Century ECM16SQU Variable Speed 1.65 HP Replacement Motor if you could email us a few photos of your current pump we could let you know if you need to replace any other parts, please email those to upload@inyopools.com I have not heard that a variable speed pump will extend the life of your salt cell.

I am completing a just less than 10000 gallon in ground lap pool with 9 solar heating panels 12 feet above ground. Would this pump be appropriate for this application provided I buy the correct filter.

Hi, Garry. This pump can be used depending on your total feet of head. You can use our How To: Size a Pool Pump guide and our How Do I Calculate Feet of Head for My Pool? blog for more info.

If you upgrade to a prologic controler later, can you run a SP3200VSP the same as a SP3200VSPND
 Reply

A  Answered on 3/7/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Joe S.

Yes, if you upgrade to a Prologic, Aqualogic or the Omnilogic Hayward control systems they will all be able to control the Tristar VS or ECO VS pumps.

I need to know how to manually start the pump and let it run until I want to turn it off. I know about the Quick Clean (only 60 min) but it's not long enough when I'm using the spa. There has to be a way to turn it on high and leave it on? Thank you for your help.
 Reply

A  Answered on 2/27/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alan M.

Here is a link to the Hayward Tristar VS Variable Speed Pump Owner's Manual. The pre-set speed settings 1-4 will run the pump at the default speeds (unless they have been programmed for different speeds) and would not turn off (unless the speeds settings are programmed for a selected run time). Please review the manual for additional information, if necessary. Thank you for the question!

Hi, Will. If you can provide the model number of the Hayward Pump you currently have we can make a comparison to find out if the TriStar VS Pump is a suitable replacement.

Replacing existing bad norstar pump that uses mech timers with a frost guard. What do i do about the frost guard now that i am wiring direct from power.

Hi, Randall. You can just bypass the time and freeze control and wire the pump directly from the breaker.

A great replacement variable speed motor is part number ECM16SQU. Make sure you replace the shaft seal when doing to motor installation, part number 5112-216.

Will this pump be a good replacement for a Sta-Rite Dyna-Max 1 hp up-rated single speed pump (MPRA6E-205L)? My pool is 18,000 gallons, we have a 53 ft^2 DE fliter, the Voltage is 230 and the ports are 2 in. If this pump is not a good choice, what other dual speed or variable speed pumps would you recommend? Thanks!
 Reply

A  Answered on 11/23/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Adam Y.

Paul, If your pump is up rated to 1.65 or lower this pump will work fine. if it is higher than 1.65tp like a 2hp. I would recommend the Hayward EcoStar Variable Speed Pump SVRS - SP3400VSPVR

Hi, Can I use this pump on my 11,000 gallon pool with 1.5" plumbing throughout and pair it with my current waterway 19 (45 Gal per minute) sand filter and a AquaCal 135 BTU heat pump? I see the general recommendation is 2 inch plumbing. Also, I do not have any automation or chlorinator... just the pool and heater straight up. I currently have a Hayward .75 HP Super Pump that works fine but want to save energy. Thank you very much!

A  Answered on 11/14/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Scott W.

If you are wanting a pump that has 1.5" ports then I would go with part number SP2600VSP.

According to the manual this pump uses 385 watts @1750RPM. At my local rate of 11c/Kwh am I correct that this pump costs 385/1000*0.11=$0.042/hr to operate vs. my single speed 220V*9.95A*1.1SF/1000*0.11=$0.264/hr to operate??
 Reply

A  Answered on 8/20/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi Marco, Your calculation is not correct on your single speed pump, you do not need to factor in the SF. Instead of $0.27/hr  it's costing you $0.24/hr.

Will the unions for the Tristar VS pump accept 2" or 2.5" plumbing? What exactly does "2" x 2.5" union connections". The manual list flow rates for various pipe sizes but it does not indicate the factory default unions accept (without reducers, ect).
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/14/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Dave, This means the union can accept either 2" or 2.5" plumbing, the inside of the unions accepts 2" plumbing and the outside of the union accepts 2.5" plumbing.

Need your recommendation. I have 2" plumbing on a 35k gallon pool. Currently I have a older Hayward Tristar 1.85 THP pump attached with a 48sqft DE filter. I am looking for a variable speed pump to cut some utility bills. I haven't measured it but I am estimating about 45' head of water. What would you all recommend? Would the Tristar VS work?
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/12/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Michael, Yes this Tristar Variable Speed Pump would be our recommendation as on the high speed it will be the exact pump as you currently have. Also the plumbing ports will be in the same location meaning no re-plumbing.

Hello Dave - The SP3200VSP pump will be more energy efficient and it will work for your application.

In most single-speed or dual-speed pump electrical wiring configurations, timers are used to provide power to the pump; one timer on a single speed; two timers on a dual speed (one a hi/low). Looking at the Tristar VS Variable Speed Pump wiring schematic, it seems that no timers are required whatsoever, and that the onboard pump control circuitry is used to turn the pump on and off, etc., without having to use any timers whatsoever. Is my understanding correct?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/8/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Sharon F.

That is correct.  The Tristar SP3200VSP model has a 24-hour clock built into it.  The Hayward Tristar VS Pump Owners Manual has details on configuring the timer.

Hi Bill - Yes you could replace your 1.5 HP Hayward pump with the Tristar variable speed pump. For this pump we would suggest that you have a minimum of 2" plumbing. You will see a considerable savings on your electrical bill by upgrading to a variable speed pump, up to 90% energy savings!
