I wold like to replace a Hayward DEfilter 3620 with the Hayward 244S sand filter. The pump is a Hayward northstar SP4010X15.
Hi, Bryan. In order to determine if the S244S sand filter is sufficient, you will need to determine the flow rate of your pool pump. You can view the steps in our How To Size a Pool Filter guide.
I asked the guy on the phone. just double checking. This is a complete filter system which includes the vertical internal pipe and horizontal fingers that connect to valve, right? I just have to add sand?
Hi, Sal. This unit comes complete with valve and lateral assembly. You will need to purchase the sand separately.
Is HTH 50lbs Pool Filter Sand good to use with this filter? I know it needs 300 lbs and I just ordered the filter from you so before I order the sand i want to be sure. If you have any better recommendations I would appreciate it. Thanks
Hi Mike D., Yes the HTH 50 lb. Pool Filter Sand would be just fine to use with this Hayward S244T Sand Filter.
Does the filter come with a pressure gauge?
Hi, Michael. Yes, this filter comes complete with a pressure gauge.
Would the S244T filter pair with my pentair Wfds-6 pump running through 1.5 tubing on high speed?
It will depend on your flow rate and I can figure that out if you have the distance from your pump to the skimmers.
What size sand filter do i ned for a 10000 gal . pool?
Hi, Donald. Sizing a pool filter is based on the flow rate of your pool pump. You can use this S244T filter if you pump flow rate do not exceed 62 GPM.
I have 3/4 hp. Hayward pump (SP2605x7) feeding a existing S200 filter. What is max flow rate for the S244T filter - specs list 62 GPM- my pump will put out 75 GPM against 10 ft. of total head- afraid my pump will over power filter.
Hi, Gordon. The S244T filter has a max flow rate of 62 GPM which based on the info you provided the pump is generating more flow than the filter can handle. You will need the S270T filter or convert your pump to a dual or variable speed pump to cut your electricity usage and flow rate down.
Hi, Would this be a good direct replacement for a starite T-240bp-1? Is there anything else that I would need except for the correct sand ? I'm about to pull the trigger and since this site has helped me in the past I'd like to buy from yourselves. My short list is currently this model or the 27" version. Thanks.
Hi, Frederick. Yes, this Hayward Sand Filter (S244T) is a great replacement for the Sta-Rite 240BP-1 filter. Other than the sand and plumbing the filter will include everything for installation. The S270T filter will be better because it will offer a higher filtration area which will increase water flow and efficiency.
I have a 16'X32'X4.5'avarage depth inground pool and would like to know if I ordered a new filter from you would a 24 inch Tank work. Pump is 1hp.
What is the distance from the pump to the main drain so I can figure out the flow rate to see if that filter will be able to handle the flow rate of your pump?
2 questions on replacement sand. 1. Is #20 sand the same as 20 mesh sand (#30 = 30 mesh)? 2. The specs say 300lb of sand, .018-.021 in (.45 - .55mm) in size. As far as I can determine, this is 30 mesh sand. All the pool sands (silica) seem to be #20, which would be larger diameter (somewhere around .03 in, .8 mm). The larger #20 sand won't filter as small as #30. Is there #30 pool sand available?
Ed- Unfortunately I've never heard of the #30 or 30 Mesh. But all I can tell you is that the MFG states clearly that they only want you to use #20 silica, so using a different size sand could void the warranty.
I have a S244t, it was not filtering, I replaced the valve, the sand with bright light and added 32 gal of liquid chlorine over a week and nothing is happening. The pressure gage shows no increase in pressure, when I back wash the water is not particularly dirty, the pool is deep green and getting greener. What would cause the filter to just recirculate?
Sounds to me like you have an air leak in either or pump or your plumbing that is not allowing you to get any pressure.
how much sand does this take to fill ?
Hello Tina, this sand filter take 300 lbs of sand.
I have a 12K capacity pool and spa and would like to change from DE to sand filter and pump. What size sand filter and pump would I need?
Got a 25,350 gal pool under construction. Water to be filtered every 8 hrs. Combined length of pvc pipes from 2 main drains and 2 skimmers to pump is approx 50 ft. Is this sand filter S244T 24" suited for this size of pool and what should be the appropriate size of pump? Thank you.
I am purchasing a house and there is a Hayward s244t filter on site but someone stole the pump. What pump would be a good fit for this filter.
Hi Jason, You can follow the steps in our How To: Size a Pool Pump guide for the info that you will need to calculate what size pump will be best for your pool and a 24" filter.
Other than location of 6 pos. valve (top vs side mount) , What is the difference between the S 244T vs S 244SV Considering purchase of one of these Sand Filters. Thank you
Hi L. Behler, The position and style of the valve are the only difference between the S244T and S244S filters.
Sand filter leaks some from bottom valve when in filter mode is this okay.
Hi Al, It's not okay because that's a sign that the valve needs servicing. I will recommend inspecting the valve before the leaking get worst.
What hoses do i need to install the S244t sand filter to hook up to the pump? is a hayward sp2610x15 1.5 hp a good fit for this filter? i have a 23,000 gal pool
Hi Lolo, There are no specialized hoses that you need to purchase to hook this filter up to a pump. Normally you would just use rigid pvc pipe or flex hoses you can purchase at a local hardware store. The Hayward sp2610x15 1.5 hp is a good fit and I also like the PureLine Pure Water 1.5 HP Pump.
I will be installing this filter to replace a Hayward E65 D.E. filter that is 12 yrs old. Viewed your install video, but just want to know if there are any surprises in store for me, aside from piping, etc. Should all piping, unions, nuts be replaced? Thanks
Billy, You will need to replumb but that should be pretty straightforward. Keep in mind that a sand filter will not filter finer particles like a d.e. filter does.
all of my plumbing is 2" can I reduce this to 1-1/2" at the valve?
Danny, If you are at the point where you are purchasing a new filter then I would suggest the S244T2 Hayward Sand Filter with 2" Ports.
My handle broke off my selector valve on my sand filter. Can I just replace the handle or do I have to replace the whole valve?
Rick, If you have the Hayward S244T Filter then yes you can just replace your handle and you can find the Hayward S244T Replacement Handle here.
Can you tell how old a Hayward s244t sand filter is. Would buying used be advisable
Hi Me, If you have the serial number of the unit you can contact Hayward at 908.355.7995 and they can tell you how old the unit is. They are risks of buying a used filter especially if it's more than 3 years old.
i already have 1 1/2 hp i think, sticker cant read magnum plus pump, jacuzzi cfr150 cartridge filter. 150 gpm for private use. needs too much cleaning.can i use Hayward S244T ProSeries 24" In- Ground Sand Pool Filter for prefilter to catch 15-20 micron then feed in series to my cfr150 cartridge filter to catch 8 micron small stuff so less cleaning needed of cartridge and can backwash sand filter.only thinking this because want to stop paying $85 for new cartridge so often, will it work.
Hi Gary, You can install this sand filter as a prefilter which will allow your cartridge element to last longer.
What size backwash hose does it need? 1.5 or 2"? Thank you.
Hello, this model sand filter, S244T, has a multiport valve plumbing size of 1.5". Thank you for the question!!!
I have a Hayward Pro Model S244T, serial 21120602003231008 and the pressure gauge rusted out and came off causing water to come gushing out. I have given you the serial # because your Model S244T shows the gauge in a different spot. Mine is on the body of the sand filter. Can I replace this gauge or should I replace the whole filter? We have had this filter for approximately 6 years.
Stephanie, Can you please attach a picture of the filter? We are unable to look up serial numbers.
I just order a s244t and I was reading that it might not be the right one! I've 26500 gallon in ground 18×36 3ft and 9 in deep! Will this filter work?and what size of pump should I use? 1hp 1.5
Hi Dan, You would first need to determine the feet of head of your pool, then base of that info determine the gpm the pump have will produce base off of the feet of head. Then compare the gpm to the filter's flow rate capacity. All this info can be found in our How To: Size a Pool Filter guide.
model S-244t what kind of sand and directions to change to new sand
Hi Bob, This unit requires 300 pounds of #20 Silica sand. You can also review our How To: Change Sand In a Sand Filter for instructions on replacing the sand in your filter.
My sand filter sprung a leak on a seam. Shoots a small stream. Is there anyway to fix this? I've tried a hot glue gun and JB Weld for plastic. Neither has worked.
Mike, The only way to fix the leak on your S244T Sand Filter with Top Mount Valve 24 Inch Tank would be to replace the tank/entire filter. The filter is under pressure so every fix you do to it will be temporary
I replaced the sand in my Hayward S244T sand filter this summer, now I'm getting small amounts of sand back into my pool after cleaning. Do you know why this may be?
Hello Monty - Check out our article titled "Sand in Your Pool?".
I need the sticker that says rinse backwash etc . mine is faded and it needs to be replaced so it readable
Hi Billy. Here's a link to a Hayward sand filter label on our site. Please take a look at the print to see if it works for yours.
How much sand is used in this filter
Hi Paul, The 24" Tank Top Mount Valve Sand Filter (S244T) needs 300 lbs of 20 grade Silica Sand.
sand from the filter is coming back into my pool. what is wrong
Sand coming back into the pool could be caused by a damaged multiport valve gasket, laterals in the filters, or the laterals aren't sitting correct.
what model lateral are need in this
Hi Joe. This filter has two styles of laterals depending on the age of the filter: for S244T filters age 2004 and prior you need the threaded laterals [p# SX240D]; for S244T filters after 2004, you need the pivot style laterals [p# SX240DN].
When our filter system was initially installed we bought a 1 hp. Super Pump to go with our S244T filter. The pool size is 16 X 32. I need to replace the pump and would like to know if I can use the 1.5 hp. Super Pump with this filter? Would there be any benefit to increasing the pump capacity?
Mike, The flow rate of the Super Pump 1.5hp will be too much for that model sand filter. With everyone wanting to save money, conserve energy and Utilities Companies offering rebates on energy saving pumps, there is no benefit to increase the hp other that you will circulate the water faster. In doing that you're spending more money to do so.
What kind of sand do I need for the Hayward 24 inch tank
George, You can use Silica Sand 20 gauge or the Zeo Sand.
will the pipes to the valve connect the same way as my old Ranger Model RS 24
David, The valve on your old Ranger sand filter and the valve on this Hayward Sand filter ports are on the same side, but can't say for sure if it will match up exact. Some adjustment might be needed or you may also need to replumb in this filter.
Looking for a replacement sight glass (glass NOT plastic) for a Hayward Pro Series Sand Filter Model#S244T. Do you have this part? Thanks
This is the part number that matches to the site glass for that Multi-port valve. SPX0710MA I know that it once was glass, but I believe they have now switched to plastic. To be 100% sure, may I suggest giving Hayward Tech a call at 908-355-7995.
Is this filter large enough to handle a 40,000 gallon in ground pool? If not which Haywood would be?
Hello Kevin - The S244T would not be sufficient for a 40,000 gallon pool. We would recommend the Hayward S310T2.
How often do I have to replace the sand in my filter? What is normal operating pressure?
On a "fresh start-up" a filter would operate anywhere between 10-20 psi. As a general rule of thumb you only want to backwash when the pressure increases 8-10 psi. You want to make certain that the pump is being turned off whenever you move the handle on the valve. Once backwashing is complete (3-5 minutes), you can switch to the rinse option to re-settle the sand bed. Sand will typically last 5-7 years. Premature backwashing will wear down the size of the sand which will cause difficulties such as cloudy water and higher operating pressures.
When should I change the sand in my filter?
You should change the sand in your filter every 5-7 years. You can generally tell that it is time if your pool water is not as clear as it normally is or when you notice the interval between backwashes is shorter. You can use > this guide to walk you through it.

Pros: Economical efficient sand filter
Excellent discription on product on web site. Best price I could find. Quick delivery. Very complete installation instruction. Best of all, it performs very well. It replaced a 20 year old, 24 inch diameter, sand filter on a 20,000 gal pool.
