Hi, can I use this filter with a hayward variable speed 1.5 HP pump? Thank you,

Hi Joe, This Waterway 16" Carefree Sand Filter is too small to handle a 1.5 hp vs pump at max rpm's. The only how this filter will work is if you keep the pump at a flow rate of 35 gpm.

How often should you change the sand ?

It is different with every pool, but on average we say 5-7 years. Once you start noticing that the pressure does not drop after backwashing, it is time to replace the sand.

Is this filter big enough for a pool 48x224?
 Reply

A  Answered on 5/13/2021 by InyoPools Product Specialist Craig C.

Hello Mitchell.  The volume formula for a rectangular pool is Length x Width x Height x Average Depth x 7.5 (dimensions in feet).  The volume formula for a circular pool is 3.14 x Radius x Radius x Average Depth x 7.5.  Unfortunately, can not accurately calculate the pool volume from the information provided. Sizing a pool filter has many contributing factors.  Pool volume and Pump size are of main consideration.  The Carefree 16" Sand Filter has 1.4 sq ft of filter area and a flow rate of 35 gallons per minute.  If the pool's volume is in the 5,000-gallon range and the pool pump does not exceed the flow rate of 35 gallons per minute, then this would be an acceptable filter size.

I have a Pentair Cartridge filter 150 sft, with a Pentair pump 1.5 horse power. Would like to switch to a sand filter, the volume of water is 12,000 gallons. What size filter do you recommend? Thanks for your help.

Thank you for contacting Inyo Pools, The Sand Dollar Top Mount Filters SD80 MPV 1.5" - EC-145333 would be a good replacement for your cartridge filter. Changing to a sand filter will slow your flow rate down

What do you mean by "slow the flow rate down"?. Do I have to run the pump longer? Please advise. Thanks for your reply.

I am sorry, I believe the agent did not finish his sentence before submitting it. The sand filter will filter out fewer microns than a cartridge filter. Sand is about 20-40 Microns and cartridge filters are about10-20. I best recommend reviewing our How To Size a Pool Filter https://www.inyopools.com/HowToPage/how-to-size-a-pool-filter.aspx before making a decision. If you are able to provide the pump model too, that would be great to verify the current flow rate the pump provides.
