Why Microban Protection?
Water and an ample food source provide the ideal condition for bacteria to quickly multiply and grow. In fact, on an unprotected surface, some microbes can double in number every 20 minutes. And only when they’ve multiplied to hundreds of thousands, can they actually be seen by the naked eye.
The images below show bacteria growth on a standard pool filter cartridge versus a pool filter cartrdge infused with Microban® antimicrobial protection over a 24 hour period.
After viewing these images, you can see how Microban® protection begins to work immediately, disrupting key bacterial cell functions so that bacteria are unable to grow or reproduce on the surface. While on the unprotected surface, bacteria quickly multiply.
How It Works
Microban technology is infused into the filtration fabric during the manufacturing process and becomes part of the molecular structure. The silver technology works continuously to provide an added level of defense that keeps your filter cleaner between cleanings. Antimicrobial protection is limited to the filter and is not designed to replace normal water treatment chemicals.
With the Microban brand, you know you’re getting continuous, durable and effective antimicrobial protection that provides an added level of defense against damaging bacteria for the useful lifetime of your pool or spa filter.
1 How long will the anti-microbial protection last?
2 How frequently must it be cleaned
3 Are there any special cleaning procedures or precautions required?
4 How long will the basic (non-microbial) filtering element last compared to standard filters?
5 Would you recommend this type of filter for whole house water filtration systems.
The anti-microbial protection lasts as long as the fiter cartridge itself lasts. Second, it will need to be cleaned at least on a monthly basis but if the swimming pool gets above average dirty then so will the filter need to be cleaned. Third, there is no other chemicals needed to clean these filters. You can choose to use the normal filter cleaners if need be but nothing special for these filters. Fourth, These filters are more durable but like any cartridge, if they are not maintained accordingly or in a system that was not properly size then they can deteriorate quicker as well. Fifth, yes you can use these types of filters for homes but there are certain types that are designed for these applications. I would stick to those specific types and not use a swimming pool model.
What types of microorganisms does Microban® protection work against
Microban® antimicrobial protection is effective against most common bacteria, yeasts, molds and fungi that cause stains, odors and product degradation. Microban technology is not designed to protect users from disease causing microorganisms.
Does Microban® protection begin working immediately?
Microban® protection begins to work as soon as the microorganism comes into contact with the product surface. It then works continuously to maintain a consistently lower bio-burden than would be expected on a product without Microban® antimicrobial protection. Under the right conditions, microbes on an untreated surface can double every 20 minutes! Microban protection is not a disinfectant, normal cleaning practices should be maintained.
How do products with Microban & antimicrobial protection work?
Microban® protection is built-in to the product during the manufacturing process. When microbes come in contact with the product surface, Microban protection penetrates the cell wall of the microorganism and disrupts cell functions disabling the microorganism’s ability to function, grow and reproduce.
What is Microban & antimicrobial product protection?
Microban® technology is built-in antimicrobial protection for solid products, coatings and fibers. Microban antimicrobial protection gives products an added level of protection against damaging microbes such as, bacteria, mold and mildew that can cause stains, odors and product deterioration.
