Is there a feedback mechanism that tells the unit the chlorine balance in the pool? Is this a way for me to automate addition of clorine to keep it always at the correct level? Or, just another place to put the tab aside from the the drain basket?

There is a dial on this unit which has a setting from 1-10 If you set the dial on 1 it will be letting the least amount of chlorine to the pool and if you have it set at 10 this would send the most amount of chlorine to the pool. So you can automate the feed of chlorine to the pool but you will still need to manually test your water. We do not recommend placing tablets in the skimmer basket because this high concentration of chlorine goes directly back to your pump and can cause corrosion to your pool equipment. If you do not go with the automatic chlorinator we would recommend at least going with one of our floating chlorinators so you do not damage your equipment you may view our floating chlorinators here http://www.inyopools.com/chlorinators_floating.aspx

The Hayward CL200 or CL220 chlorinator will provide enough chlorine for up to 40,000 gallons of water. You would need to calculate the volume of your pool to determine how many chlorinators you would need. For example, if you have 60,000 gallons then you would use two CL200 or CL220 chlorinators.

What is the difference between an inline and offline chlorinator?

An inline chlorinator would be plumbed directly inline with the plumbing. For an existing pool, this would mean a section of pipe would need to be cut out to install the chlorinator. An offline chlorinator attaches to existing plumbing by chlorinator tubing (holes would be drilled into existing pipe to attach the tubing.)

The chlorinator lid is so tight I cannot budge it -- I'm fairly strong but it's really tight. The pool guy said I was to have a tool to remove that lid -- never saw one before so guess not have. He tried to twist it off and said he was afraid he'd break it if he put more pressure on it. Tried to untwist the cap myself, but don't think it moved much --- now chlorine vapors nearly knock me down in the pump house while pump is on! What to do?

Hello Joy - This is a common issue with the Hayward CL220. I would recommend replacing the CL220 with the Rainbow 300. You will not have an issue with the Rainbow lid.

For any chlorinator it is best to install on the return after all the equipment. If you install before the equipment you will be running heavy amounts of chlorine into pumps and filters which will cause damage

New Hayward cl220 only works when set on full (10)! Never had this issue with old unit. will only fill with water set on full.

Here is the parts list for the 200 Inline and Offline Series Chlorinators.You will need to replace the seals with the Hayward CL200 Tune Up Kit. This will stop your leaking problem.

Your specifications say CL 220 chlorinator weighs 46 lbs.!! My current one probably weighs 5-6 lbs. Why the discrepancy? I don't want a very heavy chlorinator. Thanks.

The 46lbs is a typo. The weight of this chlorinator is approx 5-6 lbs.

Hi Andrew, You can confirm based on the amount of chlorine that is released into the pool. If your chlorine level is low and the chlorinator is filled then you ca clean it out by pouring hot water down the chlorinator. If that does not work you will have to replace the control valve.

is the top of the Hayward supposed to allow the inner ring to float freely, and not be tight inside the top? We can't get it to the spot, where the top locks in place, at that insert spot? We can't get it to lock.

The o-ring should not be loose in the lid, it should be set in the lid to allow the lid to tighten and seal so it doesn't leak.

Manual shows off line chlorinator inlet hose installed between pump & filter. Any problem if inlet is installed between filter & heater or even after heater as long as outlet is last in line. Hose between pump & filter is curved piece of flexible. Thanks.

Am in process of ordering a CL220 Hayward Chlorriator.. The line which runs from the back of the chlorinator now seems to be a good 8 feet long since it must travel between 2 air conditioner /heat pumps.
Do you have a line that runs that long I could also order?

I am building a 12,500 gallon therapy pool here in AK. It will run at a temperature in the mid-90 degree range. I am not sure of the flow rate but I am using a variable speed pump. I am only concerned that the lowest, "1" setting on this unit might put too much chlorine in the pool water. i would like to maintain the free chlorine level at 1 ppm. Do you think that this unit might put in too much? If so, can you recommend a better unit? Thanks.

Bill, it will be very hard to maintain your free chlorine at such a low level in a pool that large without breeding algae and other growth in your pool. All of these devices are meant to keep your pool at a normal range which is anywhere between 2-4ppm of chlorine. The lowest "1" setting would be the best chance for maintaining a level like that in your 12,500 gallon pool.

I was wondering if the CL220 would be compatible with Vita-D-Chlor tablets for dechlorination of a chlorinated water stream. Would there be any chemical/material compatibility issues?

When I open ,y Hayward chlorinator should it be full of water? I don't remember that water staying in it. Also my chlorine level in pool keeps getting low even when the chlorinator is full.

That will really depend on the way the system is plumbed, and at what point the chlorinator is opened. I would advise to have the CYA level in the pool tested before troubleshooting the chlorinator.

Hi. May I position the chlorinator anywhere? The manual shows it below the pump and filter, my pump and filter are below ground and I would like it to be above the filter (so I can add tabs from above ground level).
The Chlorinator should always be placed after the equipment so as not to feed high doses of chlorine through it. If the chlorinator is placed above the equipment you will need to place a check valve in the line before the chlorinator so it doesn't back feed.

I've read answers to this chlorinator's top becoming impossible to remove for refilling. Have held a supply & replaced o-rings almost annually, only lubricated (lightly) the o-ring itself. My unit is only 5 years old - cleaning (even with tri-sodium-phosphate) has not helped. There has to be a cause & cure.Top becomes so stuck, impossible to open / close. Have thought to actually anchoring chlorinator to concrete slap where our equipment is located, greater leverage. What am I doing wrong ?

Hi Paul, it might be a bit snug but you should be able to fit eight 3 inch chlorine tablets weekly in this chlorinator which would be sufficient for a 40k gallon swimming pool.

I bought a Hayward DE filter/pump combo. The two connect with a union on a base. Is it safe to drill through this for the offline Cl220? Or should that be changed to straight pvc plumbing? As I understand it should not have its inlet before the pump.

Researching this product, I see a check valve is required after heater and before the outlet is tied into existing pool plumbing. It appears the chlorinator has a built in check valve on the outlet side. Is it necessary to install an additional check valve between the heater and where the outlet from the chlorinator ties into the existing plumbing, or is the check value on the chlorinator outlet sufficient?

The check valve included with the chlorinator is not sufficient. It is recommended that a separate check valve be installed to prevent the chlorine gas from backing up into the heater/filter.

I have a Pentair 150# sand filter w/ Dynamo pump, 2spd, 1.5 hp will the the CL110 be sufficient or do I need the CL220 ?

Either model would work with your pump and filter. The Hayward CL110 chlorinator will provide enough chlorine for up to 18,000 gallons of water. If the volume of your pool is greater than this, you would need the CL220 model which is for pools up to 40,000 gallons.

The only way you can bypass it is to cut it out and replace it with pipe. You will want to make sure you are providing chlorine some other way for your swimming pool.
