I need to replace the single speed motor on a Jandy Stealth SPHM2.0 (AO Smith Centurion 7-193994-06) with a dual speed. Is this the correct one? I also need the appropriate pump shaft seal to go with it.

 Reply

A  Answered on 5/26/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi David you would actually need the B2983 1.5 HP Full Rate Dual Speed Motor and this Jandy Stealth Shaft Seal You have a 2 HP Up Rate Motor which is equivalent in power to the 1.5 HP Full Rate Motor I have suggested. Could you let us know how you currently control your pump? If you are using a standard yellow dial timer then you will need to purchase this T106 Dual Speed Timer to control the Dual Speed Motor.

Thanks so much for your reply. I have a 10 year old Jandy Aqualink PDA system upgraded to a newer PDA but NOT the new board with the socketed CPU. The board schematic indicates a dip switch setting for a dual speed motor, and the Jandy parts rep said it could take a dual speed motor. 1)I am a bit confused since I don't see a service factor on my pump label. 2) Is a VS motor running at 1750 rpm more energy efficient than a dual speed motor running at the same speed? Thx, David

    • Commented on 5/27/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi David, I was under the impression that you need this Jandy AquaLink Dual Speed Relay for a Dual Speed Pump. Your current pump relay would power the pump on and off and the Dual Speed Relay would change from high to low speeds. You would need to make sure you had space in the AquaLink to add the extra relay. The model # of SPHM2.0 indicates you have Up Rated Motor and the 7-193994-06 motor number also confirms this. A VS motor and Dual Speed Motor running at 1750 RPM would have the same energy savings.

I have a AO Smith 2 HP 2 speed motor. (196159). Will this Century 2.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Dual Speed Full Rate Motor - B2984 work . My system uses both the high speed and low speed. also does this come with the seal and bearing kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 4/2/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi John, Yes this is the proper replacement motor for your 196159. For the seal kit we will need to know the make and model of your pump. Could you give us the pump make and model information, common pump names would be Pentair Whisperflo, Pentair Challenger, Jandy Stealth, etc.. To supply this information click the reply link below, also if you could send a few photos those are always helpful as well. If you send photos then take a close up shot of the motor label as well as a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get any of this information we can make the proper recommendation for the seal kit.

Hi John, Thanks for the photos those are helpful! You have a Jandy Stealth Pump and you will need a shaft seal when you replace your motor and this pump has used two different shaft seals and this is determined by the serial # on the side of the pump. If your serial # is before P08FF0001 then you will need this Old Style Jandy Shaft Seal and if your Serial # is after P08FF0001 you will need this New Style Jandy Shaft Seal For example if the serial # starts with an A then that is before P08FF0001 and if your serial # starts with a R than that is after P08FF0001.

My Jandy stealth 2.0 dual speed motor recently seemed to have went bad, so I replaced the bearings and the capacitor. When I wired it back up to test the motor it would start up in high only for a few seconds and then pop the breaker, also it would not start up in low, it would only hum but not move. Not sure what to do now weather the motor is bad or did I not replace all the parts I need to replace. Also, does this motor have 2 caps or just 1.

My N/P says 11.0/4.0 Am I good with this replacement? Wiring labeling is also a bit different. Mine shows 1 - 2 and 3or4 for the 3 terminals. Motor/pump are approx 11-12 years old. Should I replace all replaceable pump parts while it is all apart? Can you tell me what pump kit I would need? Its a Jandy Stealth SHFP 2.0-2 2 HP

Hello, this would be the correct motor for you. For the internal parts, you only need to replace those if they appear worn or damaged. However, you will need a new shaft seal. I can provide the correct one if you could please provide me the serial number off of your plastic housing.

I’m replacing my single speed pump with your dual speed Max-Pro. I’m installing an additional timer to control the two speeds. The intermatic T106R timer has several wiring options, one for SINGLE POLE NORMALLY CLOSED and one for SINGLE POLE DOUBLE THROW. Which wiring option should I use for your dual speed pump. If you have a wiring diagram that would be even better, I’m in a little over my head. Thank you, frank.

I’ve now successfully changed the Whisperflo motor 2 a two-speed, Century/AO Smith (B2984). Added the Pentair two-speed relay. Wired as indicated on back of Intellitouch 8 panel door and pump connection diagrams (A=Low, L1=High, L2=Com). No circuits show to be on, but the pump runs in low speed continuously. I know the intent of the two-speed pump is to run longer, but is it intended to be constant? I’d like to give it and my energy usage a break for at least a couple of hours a day.

Hi, Patrick. The Century B2983 - 1.5 HP Dual Spd. Full Rate Motor is the correct dual speed replacement motor for the WF-28C model pump. You can also use this B2984 - 2 HP Dual Spd. Full Rate Motor which will provide you with a higher flow rate at low speed than the B2983 option. You will also need to get the Toggle Switch Canopy Kit - 2512558-001 and the Whisperflo Tune Up Kit -  GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT

I'd like to identify both a 2 speed replacement as well as an appropriate 1 speed replacement option. Also, is there an estimated electricity $$ saving for 2 speed vs 1 speed? thanks! rjb

Hi, RBJ. Your replacement motor options will be the B2982 (Dual-Speed) or the B2854 (Single-Speed). You can save approximately 30-50% using a dual speed over a single speed motor.

Cassie, Yes this will work but in addition to the motor, you will either need a dual speed timer to control the speeds or you will need a dual speed switch. We also recommend replacing the shaft seal when replacing the motor. The SHPM has 2 different shaft seals depending on the age of the pump.

How do you switch from one speed to the other on this motor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 4/27/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Morales, On this motor you would need a seperate external control to switch from high speed to low speed. If you currently have a standard yellow dial timer then you require the purchase of a T106R dual speed pump timer. Your current timer would power the motor on and off and the T106R timer would control the high and low speeds. For this reason I like the B2984T Digital Dual Speed Motor which is this same motor but with an integrated digital timer on top of the motor. The digital dual speed motor is about the same cost as purchasing this motor with the T106R timer however the digital dual speed B2984T is much easier to install and program.

A  Answered on 2/16/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

How can I tell whether or not my motor is a dual or single speed?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/18/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Most dual speed motors will have a toggle switch that will allow you to adjust the motor speed to either high or low. Another way to tell if your motor is dual speed is by looking at the RPM's on the motor specifications label. If there are two RPM's listed such as: 1725/3450 then motor is dual speed. If there is only one RPM, then motor is single speed.

Unfortunately the manufacturer does not offer the switch for the 2 speed 220v motors any longer. If you already have a 220 volt timer (on/off) you would need an Intermatic T106R to switch from high to low speed. If you do not have a timer currently you would need the T10604R which is a 220v on/off timer and a high/low timer.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.
