I need to replace my pool pump motor, an Century two speed A.O. Smith part number 193990, 2 HP. Used on Jandy Stealth model SHPM2.0-2. I can't find a match in your parts listing. Please provide information for alternative or if you carry the exact part please provide ordering cost information. Also what other parts I will need i.e. gaskets/seals to do the replacement. Thank you.

The replacement motor is the part number B983 and you can click here to view the parts diagram which we would recommend replacing keys 5, 13 and 15. You will need to know the serial number of the Stealth pump housing in order to confirm the shaft seal that you will need. (key 5)

I have a pentair whisperflo with ao smith 2 speed motor. I have only part of the label information (Cat B984, part 7-177069, type CXPM, Frame: Y56, HP: 2.0-0.33, RPM: 3450/1725, volt: 230, SF: 1.3, Amps: 11.0/4.0). Your motor B2984 is listed together as an alternate to B984. However, the specs are different. Which one should I buy. Also If I can just replace the bearings and the thru bolts, which bearings and thru bolts would be needed for AO Smith B984 motor (specs mentioned above).

Hi, Sam. This B2984 motor is the correct replacement. You can replace the bearings (1) 6304 - 10000445 and (1) 6203 - 10000353. As for the thru-bolt its Part # 16285678. You will also need to get the Whisperflo Tune Up Kit -  GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT.

I’m replacing my single speed pump with your dual speed Max-Pro. I’m installing an additional timer to control the two speeds. The intermatic T106R timer has several wiring options, one for SINGLE POLE NORMALLY CLOSED and one for SINGLE POLE DOUBLE THROW. Which wiring option should I use for your dual speed pump. If you have a wiring diagram that would be even better, I’m in a little over my head. Thank you, frank.

I’ve now successfully changed the Whisperflo motor 2 a two-speed, Century/AO Smith (B2984). Added the Pentair two-speed relay. Wired as indicated on back of Intellitouch 8 panel door and pump connection diagrams (A=Low, L1=High, L2=Com). No circuits show to be on, but the pump runs in low speed continuously. I know the intent of the two-speed pump is to run longer, but is it intended to be constant? I’d like to give it and my energy usage a break for at least a couple of hours a day.

Hi, El_Jefe. You will have to re-program your Intellitouch controller to use a dual speed pump.

Hi, Patrick. The Century B2983 - 1.5 HP Dual Spd. Full Rate Motor is the correct dual speed replacement motor for the WF-28C model pump. You can also use this B2984 - 2 HP Dual Spd. Full Rate Motor which will provide you with a higher flow rate at low speed than the B2983 option. You will also need to get the Toggle Switch Canopy Kit - 2512558-001 and the Whisperflo Tune Up Kit -  GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT

I'd like to identify both a 2 speed replacement as well as an appropriate 1 speed replacement option. Also, is there an estimated electricity $$ saving for 2 speed vs 1 speed? thanks! rjb

Hi, RBJ. Your replacement motor options will be the B2982 (Dual-Speed) or the B2854 (Single-Speed). You can save approximately 30-50% using a dual speed over a single speed motor.

Cassie, Yes this will work but in addition to the motor, you will either need a dual speed timer to control the speeds or you will need a dual speed switch. We also recommend replacing the shaft seal when replacing the motor. The SHPM has 2 different shaft seals depending on the age of the pump.

How do you switch from one speed to the other on this motor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 4/27/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Morales, On this motor you would need a seperate external control to switch from high speed to low speed. If you currently have a standard yellow dial timer then you require the purchase of a T106R dual speed pump timer. Your current timer would power the motor on and off and the T106R timer would control the high and low speeds. For this reason I like the B2984T Digital Dual Speed Motor which is this same motor but with an integrated digital timer on top of the motor. The digital dual speed motor is about the same cost as purchasing this motor with the T106R timer however the digital dual speed B2984T is much easier to install and program.

 Reply

A  Answered on 2/16/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

How can I tell whether or not my motor is a dual or single speed?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/18/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Most dual speed motors will have a toggle switch that will allow you to adjust the motor speed to either high or low. Another way to tell if your motor is dual speed is by looking at the RPM's on the motor specifications label. If there are two RPM's listed such as: 1725/3450 then motor is dual speed. If there is only one RPM, then motor is single speed.

Unfortunately the manufacturer does not offer the switch for the 2 speed 220v motors any longer. If you already have a 220 volt timer (on/off) you would need an Intermatic T106R to switch from high to low speed. If you do not have a timer currently you would need the T10604R which is a 220v on/off timer and a high/low timer.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.
