TagelusTop Mount Fiberglass Sand Filter The design that revolutionized a timeless technology Sand filters are one of the most popular ways to filter water. For good reasons. They are simple, effective, and require very little attention. Pool water is routed through a sand-filled pressure vessel. The sand traps particles large and small…so small they are undetectable to the human eye. Over time, dirt accumulates in the spaces between the sand particles causing the pressure in the vessel to rise as water finds it harder to pass through. This signals you to “backwash” the filter. Simply reverse the water flow and “knock out” the dirt. What could be simpler.
But all sand filters are not created equal. For optimum filtration all the water must flow through the same amount of sand at the proper rate. That’s why all Pentair sand filters feature a special internal design that keeps the sand bed level, ensures even water flow, and results in the most efficient filtration possible. That’s why more than 2 million Pentair filters have been installed worldwide. Tagelus provides consistent, high performance cleaning of every gallon of water that passes through it. The key is a combination of design features that eliminates “channeling”—a condition that allows water to race through the filter too quickly for effective cleaning.
Standard features include:
1. Patented process creates a one-piece, corrosion resistant, fiberglass reinforced tank of unmatched strength and durability.
2. Six-position Hi-Flow™ valve has built-in pressure gauge, manual air relief valve, and sight glass to make inspection, and routine maintenance fast, safe, and easy.
3. Exclusive internal design ensures optimum flow characteristics for more efficient filtration, long filter cycles, and economical operation.
Tagelus filters are known around the world for their ability to deliver clean, clear water, with minimal maintenance. Their time-proven design ensures trouble-free
performance and long life.
Additional features include:

Which side of the MP valve does the pump connect? Is it reversible? My pump is on the right side and I done want ro reconfigure the plumbing.
Hi, Joe P. The pump port on the valve is perpendicular to the Waste and Return ports.
How can I tell if I have Tagelus 60 or 60D. The top vlave has 7 positions. On the lable it also says Purex Triton
Hi, John. The D models has a clamp style valve all other model has a threaded style valve.
Can this filter be used for salt water pools?
Hi, Justin. Yes, this filter can be used with saltwater pools.
I have a Pentair Sand dollar SD60. It has developed a small pin hole leak in the seam. This filter is 6 years old. This is my second sand dollar filter in 22 years. This first one only had to be change out due to the pool crew dropped it and broke the shell while changing out the sand.. I have had great success with this type of filter. I was thinking about up grading to th Pentair Tagelus TA 60 If I did should I expect a cleaner pool?
Hi, Alex. The TA-60D filter has a higher filtration surface area than the SD60 filter which will hold more debris allowing you backwash less. Your pool can stay cleaner longer.
The Pentair TA 60D Filter literature says it comes with a 1 1/2" or 2" Valve. I would like to know what the Model with the 2" Valve costs. Thank You, Dennis
Hi, Dennis. The Pentair Filter TA-60D(2) - 145385 is the model with the 2" valve.
Show how to put water in it
Hello, we show this in our "How to change sand" video.
The safety collar will not fit correctly after we changed the sand Any ideas? It will not meet and seems to have a gap around the back side
MY, i would recommend making sure that the lateral assembly is properly seated inside of the tank. That may be your issue.
My current filter is an older (not sure how old.....) Tagelus Deluxe TA-60D. According to the label on my filter, it takes 250 lbs of #20 silica sand. The specs on the current model advertised on your website says it takes 325 lbs. That's a pretty big difference. Any explanation?
Hi RK, I'm not sure of why the difference but I would stick to the amount of sand listed on your label.
The hand lever that turns the filter positions broke off,my valves are working fine I just need the top portion only is it replaceable like this
Hi. The Top Valve Assembly - 272531 will fit the OEM valve that comes with the filter. If you do not have the original valve you will need to provide the valve model number so that we can locate the correct top valve assembly.
my ta-60/60d 7 positions, is this a 6way valve ?
Hello Walt, Some have 6 and one that has 7 positions which is 1 1/2" Top Mount Valve Flanged (262506) - 4600-2506. depending on what your looking for please go to parts to see if this is your correct filter and what size plumbing do you have.
would 1 hp. power pump motor be capable of operating this filter.
It's going to depend on the flow rate. That filter is able to handle 60 gpm. I would need to know the total resistance, the distance from your pump to the main drain, to figure out the flow rate to see if your pump will work with that filter.
Hi, I would like to order this product without the 6 Way Valve. Is that possible? Thanks,
You might be able to somewhere else, but unfortunately, we don't offer the Tagelus without the top valve.
Just purchased the TA 60D, and need to replace my 3/4 hp pump as well. Have been told I need a 1.5 hp pump for this filter. Is this true, or can I go lower hp? I have an inground pool, about 18,000 gallons, with pump running 12 hours a day. I look forward to your reply, and thanks in advance. Craig
Hi Craig, You do not necessarily need a 1.5 hp pump with this filter, a 3/4 hp pump can also be used depending on the flow rate. You can review our How To: Size a Pool Pump guide for information that can assist you with matching the correct size pump for your pool.
Can you use the ZeoSand as an alternative for this filter?
Yes you can absolutely use ZeoSand as an alternative to regular filter sand. You would use 1lb of ZeoSand for every 2lbs of filter sand. The TA60D filer you referenced uses 325lbs of filter sand.
We have a tangelos ta 40. The scewscrews to the multi port valve at not tightening down. The wire springs have come out. What can we do?
Hi, I would recommend replacing the entire valve, rebuilding it can cost just as much.
I would like to know is there a overflow value on the TA-60 D so that my pool will not overflow?
Hello Dio - There is not an overflow valve on the TA-60D. If the water level rises you can put the multiport valve in the waste position and run the system to drain water from the pool.
I have a pacfab tagelus TA60/60D pool filter system and it is leaking water around the topclamp of the fiberglass tank . I tried to tighten the clamp screws but this did not stop the leak. What parts do I need to stop this leak?
How many pounds of filtration sand should I use to fill it?
Hi, The Pentair Tagelus TA-60D filter requires 325 lbs of #20 Silica Sand.
Does the new filter come with sand already instdalled
No these filters do not come with sand already installed. It takes approximately 325 pounds of sand.
There are threads on the inside and outside of the ports. What type of connector would you use for the outside threads?
Is there a difference between a TA 60 and a TA 60D, if there is what is it
Hi Wayne, The TA60 is called the Tagelus and the TA60D is called the Tagelus Deluxe. From what I can tell the only difference between the two filters is the valve as the TA60 used a screw on valve and the TA60D uses a clamp on valve. All of the internal components of the filter are the same.
Ta60d bought 1999 top mount ,clamp on . I think the diverter is 262506? How can I confirm?
Hi Bill, Yes the Pentair 262506 Valve is the correct replacement valve for tagelus filter which uses the clamp on valve.
after i backwash , water comes out when i put it in the filter slot ?? a friend said my spider gasket was bad ??
Bill- That is correct, it would be a spider gasket issue. If you can find the model of the valve we can get you the right spider gasket.
On the pentair TA 60 tagelus does it matter which way the openings in the fingers face. I changed the sand and when I backed washed half a bag of sand came out.. Thank you
Hi Mark, The laterals within your filter should be positioned as shown in this guide here on How to Replace Pool Filter Laterals. You will want to inspect that there are no cracks in any of your laterals and yes the openings on the laterals should be faced up.
Can you get the clear site glass for 6way valves
Hi Curtis, Yes we do carry the Sight Glass For the Pentair Tagelus 6 Way Valve.
What is the model number for the multiport valve that comes with this?
Charles, The Pentair 262506 multiport valve comes with the Pentair Teagelus TA60D filter.
could you please send me a top view of the handle showing dial settings mine has worn out and cant read setting positions? Thanks in advance.
Hello Mary - Click Here to view the top of the valve.
When should I change the sand in my filter?
You should change the sand in your filter every 5-7 years. You can generally tell that it is time if your pool water is not as clear as it normally is or when you notice the interval between backwashes is shorter. You can use > this guide to walk you through it.
(3 out of 5 stars) Improved Lateral Design from Older Versions, but the Fiberglass Build Quality Needs Improvement
Reviewed By: ()
I purchased this as a like for like replacement of my old sand filter, which was from 2005. The old unit had to be replaced for several cracks in the fiberglass which had small leaks, the sand needed changing, and the seals in the valve were worn out. The design has improved in that time, mostly for the laterals/valve/pressure gauge. What was seriously lacking was the build quality of the fiberglass vessel. The stand in the bottom of the vessel which holds the laterals off the floor and in the center was not glued properly and had broken off during shipping. I had to purchase epoxy to make a repair and wait 24hrs before getting to work. Also the glassing around the drain plug is very poorly done and covered by silicone. I'm actually a little concerned it wont' last, but I guess that's what a warranty is for. Last but not least the coating/paint on the vessel is worthless. It scratches very easily and doesn't really protect the fiberglass. This really shows on my old filter because it has several spots with exposed fiberglass and cracks, which means they must have not made any improvements in coatings since 2005. The install went very quick (<2hrs). This was because I didn't have to make any piping changes due to the like for like replacement - which I was going for. Right now the pool is filtering very well. The improvements on the lateral design from the 2005 model are very apparent and it doesn't hurt to have fresh sand. I'm pleased with the operation, but I'm only giving 3 stars because I expect better build quality for $460.
