When should I change the sand in my filter?
 Reply

You should change the sand in your filter every 5-7 years. You can generally tell that it is time if your pool water is not as clear as it normally is or when you notice the interval between backwashes is shorter. You can use > this guide to walk you through it.

How often do I have to replace the sand in my filter? What is normal operating pressure?
 Reply

A  Answered on 3/1/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

On a "fresh start-up" a filter would operate anywhere between 10-20 psi. As a general rule of thumb you only want to backwash when the pressure increases 8-10 psi. You want to make certain that the pump is being turned off whenever you move the handle on the valve. Once backwashing is complete (3-5 minutes), you can switch to the rinse option to re-settle the sand bed. Sand will typically last 5-7 years. Premature backwashing will wear down the size of the sand which will cause difficulties such as cloudy water and higher operating pressures.

I just replaced the sand in my filter. When I turned the pump on, a lot of sand shot back into the pool but there is little to no suction. What do I do?

If you are getting sand back into the pool, that would be an indication that the laterals would need to be replaced. If I am understanding correctly, you lost suction after the sand was replaced. If so, you may want to check the line between the skimmers and the pump. The skimmer closest to the pump and filter should give you the strongest suction. You can also try blocking on of the skimmers to see if this helps.

My valve needs to be replaced. Is the part SP0714T correct?

The SP0714T would be the correct valve for the S210T.

We purchased our house a couple of months ago, it came with an 11,000 gallon above ground pool with a Hayward Pro Series High rate sand filter. (s210T ). Everything was working fine up until a couple of weeks ago. Now when I vacuum the pool I can see the dirt and green algae being blown back in after a couple of minutes. I have it on the filter setting like it is supposed to be and I have backwashed and rinsed but it is still shooting everything back in the pool. Please help.

If there is too much algae or dirt in the pool then older sand may not efficiently filter these organics and such out. Its wisest to vacuum this debris directly out of the pool keepng the multiport in the waste position then using the filter to grab the rest of the impurities. Also make sure that the pool has enough water when performing this task. Lastly please be advised that sand should be changed anywhere between 5-10 years.

I have a 27 ft round above ground pool is this filter correct for this pool. the pump is 1.5 hp and the plumbing is 11/2 pvc. Right now it has a de filter which worked alright but I live in the south and it was consent cleaning due to the high pollen.

Hello, The Hayward 20" tank will work with your size pool. Please keep in mind that you may need to get a new pump. An above ground d.e. filter uses a "horizontal discharge" or a "side discharge" pump. An above ground sand filter uses a "top discharge" or a "vertical discharge" pump.

Why is my filter returning sand to my pool
 Reply

A  Answered on 5/27/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alan M.

Either your standpipe or your laterals cracked and chances are it’s one or more of the laterals located at the bottom of the standpipe. The standpipe is pretty thick and harder to crack than the laterals at the bottom, and only one of them needs to crack in order for it to leak sand into your pool.

I recently changed out my old sand in my Hayward pool filter. I started to replace it with the new filter sand, but the new pool sand is real fine compared to the old sand I took out. I am worried that the new sand will clog my laterals because it is finer than the old sand. Should I be concerned or is this perfectly normal sand for pool filters.? The sand I am using is "Quikrete No. 1153 Pool Filter Sand" purchased at Home Depot.

Hi Jim, The "Quikrete No. 1153 Pool Filter Sand" is okay to use as long as the required amount of sand is used.

I sent an e-mail earlier. I incorrectly calculated the size of my pool; it is actually only 24K gallon. I noticed that the Hayward S210T w/ 20" tank has a height of 38". Does that include the base and valve assembly? Also, how long does shipping take? I'm in a bit of a rush.
 Reply

A  Answered on 7/30/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alex V.

Brad, The 38" measurement is from the top of the valve handle to the bottom of the base. Shipping usually takes 3-8 business days.

Hi Matt, it would work, but you could go with this pre-made combination Hayward S210T Filter w/ 1.5 HP Matrix Pump - W3S210T93S and save a few dollars.  It comes with the filter and the pump you are looking at.  It is in stock and ready to ship.
