How do you know if a pool heater is a propane heater or a natural gas heater?

Typically in the product name we use the abbreviation of "LP" for propane or "NG" for natural gas. Click here for a full listing of our >Pool Heaters.

What is the difference between an Electronic and Millivolt ignition?
 Reply

A  Answered on 10/10/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

The basic answer is that Millivolt is the old style of ignition, using a standing pilot light. While the electronic ignition uses a spark start system like a gas grill. Electronic ignitions are more efficient in gas usage and also are better suited for high wind areas where a pilot light might get extinguished.

I would like to use the propane heater for off the grid application and I see it has a 120v plug. So is this for a circulating pump or ignition purpose and does it use a lot of power.
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/23/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alex V.

Murguy, You will need approx. 70 gpm through the heater for it to run. The "electric" on the heater is used to create spark ignition. Electric costs will vary depending on usage and cost (kwh) but can range from $75-$500. per month.

Hi Terry, A 100 lb propane tank holds about 23.6 gallons of propane, and this unit can use about 1 gallon an hour to heat your pool. That that will provide you with 23 hours of heating time.

Wow...So your saying you could use a 100lb propane tank every 24hrs to heat a 24 foot round pool? That's like $70-$80 per day usage? Am I correct? Obviously when it gets up to temp it will cost less but we r thinking of going to a propane heater but might try a different solutionafter hearing these numbers. Thanks for the information though.

For that size of pool I would not recommend a heater smaller than the 300,000 BTU model, H300FDP, but for a pool I usually recommend a heat pump because it is more cost efficient. The heat pump I would recommend for your pool size would be part number HP21404T.

 Reply

A  Answered on 5/3/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Stacey M.

Hello, The H100IDP1 would be good to heat your above ground pool, I would recommend a solar blanket to lock in more heat so you don't have to run your heater that long.  How long would it take to heat up your pool? That is depending on what temperature you would like it, anywhere from 12-24 hours if you are running that whole time GPM (gallons per minute) on this heater is 20-70 so for an 8hour turnover rate should be good in about 12 hours. We cannot determine how long that would last.

Julie, A 100k btu heater will be fine for an 18' round solid wall abg pool. The choice between natural gas and propane will depend on what will be easier to install. Keep in mind that you will have to have a propane tank installed on your property for the propane heater.

Found this heater with the pool at a house I just purchased. I'm concerned I don't have the correct propane connector/hose. The propane hose inlet appears to have a female fitting, meaning the hose from the propane tank needs a male end? I'm finding most propane hoses have a female end connector.
