What is the thickness of the cover.

Bob, There is no thickness listed. Based on the cover diameter, I would say this is approximately 1/2" thick.

Do you need to drain your pool to fix this.

Hi. Draining the pool is not required for replacing or fixing the main drain cover.

Does this completely stop the flow through the bottom drain?

No, the main drain isn't actually a drain in the sense that it drains the water out of your pool. Instead, it's an outlet that sucks water through a skimmer then through the filter, and back to the pool.

Dave, This drain cover has O.D measurement of 8-3/8" with 5-3/8" center to center screw holes.

Does this Olympic drain cover replace the vortex ones that the pool cleaners always get stuck on?

No, we really need to know what your original was.

You might consider trying this Polaris UniCover which is designed to go over your current cover to prevent pool cleaners from getting stuck on drain covers.
