The item describes it as a main drain bumper. Which is it and how and where does it go? Apparently I have had this item for years, but not sure why it was bought.

The SP1048AVH is a Main Drain Bumper. It clips onto your main drain and prevents the automatic cleaner from getting trapped on the cover.

My pool has two main drains and the Hayward Navigator keeps getting hung up on one or the other. Is this the fix for that and if so, how does it attach to the drain?

The bumper clips right onto the Hayward Anti-Vortex main drain cover. This will prevent the Hayward Navigator from getting stuck on the drain.

This goes on an 8" round Hayward pool drain. We also carry a universal pool drain cover which would help out if your cleaner is getting stuck on your main drain.

Pros: Does exactly what it should. Lasts a long time.
Cons: Clips are susceptible to sun damage over the long haul
Ignore the photo - the inner part is facing the wrong way. The unit clips on the drain cover and the softer rubber bit then sticks up and will keep the Hayward vac from getting hi-centered most of the time. I use a 2-foot length of 1-1/2" PVC pipe stuck in the rubber bit to keep the vac moving. We ordered it in 2011 and just now are ordering a replacement - sunlight destroyed the clips. 5-year life - not bad. Too bad the price has almost doubled from 2011. But, it does the job.

Cons: Product does not last long.
This is a replacement part for original equipment that keeps breaking with time. No choice. Original product becomes brittle in pool and breaks. I wish there was another alternative to this product. But I haven't found one yet.
