Q:What is the difference between an Electronic and Millivolt ignition?
A:The basic answer is that Millivolt is the old style of ignition, using a standing pilot light. While the electronic ignition uses a spark start system like a gas grill. Electronic ignitions are more efficient in gas usage and also are better suited for high wind areas where a pilot light might get extinguished.
Q:I would like to replace my current heater with this unit. It is supplied with propane but I will have Nat Gas next year. What is the parts cost to convert? Also, this will replace a Ray Pak P-R405A. Is the wiring basically the same?
A:The Conversion kit for the 406 unit is only available for the milivolt unit and not the electronic ignition unit, you may view the conversion kit here http://www.inyopools.com/pool_parts_raypak_atmospheric_heaters.aspx (last part on the page - $125.99) This link has an explanation on the differences of electronic ignition and milivolt ignition http://www.inyopools.com/poolanswers_heaters.aspx#electonic_millivolt_ignition and if you would like to purchase the entire heater you may do so here http://www.inyopools.com/heaters_rpseries.aspx Yes this would replace the P-R405A and if you went with the electronic ignition version the wiring would be relatively the same, however if you went with the milivolt ignition there would be not wiring involved.
Q:Does this heater require a vent collar for indoor installation? It will be in a separate room with a vented door and not connected to the house.
A:Any gas or propane heater installed would require the appropriate indoor draft hood be installed. This would allow for proper ventilation of the heaters exhaust fumes.
Q:Will a gas heater operate at the low speed of a dual speed motor?
A:Probably not - Most gas heater will shut off at low GPM levels (20-40) to keep the heater cores from overheating - 20 for 200 BTUs, 40 for 400 BTUs. Depending on your pool system you might get these GPM levels at the low speed but generally these heaters must be run at the motor's high speed.
