When should I change the sand in my filter?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/27/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

You should change the sand in your filter every 5-7 years. You can generally tell that it is time if your pool water is not as clear as it normally is or when you notice the interval between backwashes is shorter. You can use > this guide to walk you through it.

How often do I have to replace the sand in my filter? What is normal operating pressure?
 Reply

A  Answered on 3/1/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

On a "fresh start-up" a filter would operate anywhere between 10-20 psi. As a general rule of thumb you only want to backwash when the pressure increases 8-10 psi. You want to make certain that the pump is being turned off whenever you move the handle on the valve. Once backwashing is complete (3-5 minutes), you can switch to the rinse option to re-settle the sand bed. Sand will typically last 5-7 years. Premature backwashing will wear down the size of the sand which will cause difficulties such as cloudy water and higher operating pressures.

My pool is a 24 ft. dia above ground (13,500 gallons) and I'm using a 1 hp motor on my pump with 1 1/2 inch pvc plumbing. Will a Hayward #S180T be a good selection to replace my worn out 20 year old sand filter? If not, what model would you recommend? Thank you.

A  Answered on 5/20/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Rich, The Hayward S180T would be a great replacement sand filter for your sized pool. Also the S180T pairs nicely with a 1 hp pump.

Hi Joe, Yes an inliine chlorinator can be used with the S180T filter. You would just want to make sure you plumb the chlorinator after the filter.

 Reply

A  Answered on 7/1/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi Snow, Your filter size is based on the size pump you have and the pump is determine by your size pool and feet of head. If you provide us with your pump size I can confirm if this filter will work for you.

My pump is Hayward SP1580X15 Power-Flo LX Series 1-1/2-Horsepower I'm looking to replace my current sand filter. I would like to get a sand filter that works the best with my current pump. If needed to improve the filtration I can replace the pump as well. Also do they make anything for above ground that can connect to the pump discharge inside the pool that will keep the dirt on the bottom of the pool suspended so the filter can remove? I would like to cut down on how often I have to vaccum.
 Reply

A  Answered on 7/5/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi Snow, You can improve your filtration without replacing the pump. The Sand Filter W/Top Mount Valve 22" Tank (S220T) would be a good size filter to maximize your filtration. Unfortunately vacuuming would be the only way to remove dirt off the bottom of your pool, you can choose from our selection of Above Ground Pool Cleaners to cut down on how often you will have to vacuum.

What size filter should I need for a 27 ft round pool 48" deep. I have a 1.5 hp pump.
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/14/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

You could get by with this 18" Sand Filter but I would suggest the 21" Hayward Sand Filter as it has larger filtering capacity meaning more time between cleaning your filter and longer life for your 1.5 HP pump.

We have a 2.5 hp pump will this sand filter work for us. The pump is oversized for our pool.
 Reply

A  Answered on 7/28/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Scott W.

It's going to depend on your total resistance in feet, but most likely that is going to be too small of a filter since it's max flow rate it can handle is 35 gpm.

I had a Hayward S190TSCPES that developed a split in the seam. While under mfg warranty, the dealer replaced with a S180T for a 27' round pool holding 17000 gallons. Since the replacement, I've noticed a decreased flow and more sediment on the bottom of the pool than I did last year. Is this the correct model I have Hayward SP1580X15FP with 1.5" piping.

Hello, this is correct filter, you might want to call Hayward 800-657-2287 to troubleshoot, you might have a lateral problem that is kicking sand in your pool.

Sorry about so many questions, but I am trying to put together my pool package....Would this sand filter suffice for 12000 gallon pool, 1.5hp purline pump, 12 ft. head? The specs show about 6 hour turnaround.....Or should I reduce my pump to 1hp?
 Reply

A  Answered on 4/17/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, John. This filter is adequate for a 12,000 gallon pool. However with 12 feet of head which seem to quite low a 1.5 HP pump will be too much if it's being used for normal filtration. Reducing the pump's horsepower would be a start. You do not want your flow rate to exceed 35 GPM using this S180T filter.

Hi Tom, the spider gasket for the Hayward S180T is only sold glued into the diverter, you cannot get the spider gasket by itself. Here is a link to the Hayward S180T Diverter with Spider Gasket Glued In that you will require. Also here is a Photo Showing the Spider Gasket Glued Into the Diverter.

I'm trying to find a pressure release valve on here. The skimmer basket looks like a river, instead of it being fully pressurized, I'm thinking it's because there's air in there. Am I right with that assumption? Any ideas on where to start to fix that?

A  Answered on 7/4/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alex V.

James, The S180T does not have an air release valve. To lower the pressure, you will need to backwash the filter.

Hello Nicole.  The Sta-Rite Ii-Rate Sand Filter model T-170BP-1 has a filtration area of 1.8 sq ft, an Optimal Flow Rate of 24 GPM, requires 150 lbs. of sand, and has 1 1/2" plumbing size.  The Hayward Sand Filter with Top Mount Valve 18" Tank - W3S180T has a filtration area of 1.75 sq ft, a Flow Rating of 35 GPM, requires 150 lbs. of sand, and has 1 1/2" plumbing size.  The Hayward W3S180T would be an excellent cost-effective replacement for the Sta-Rite T-107BP-1.  Attached please find a complete listing of sand filters available through INYO Pools for additional reference.  Sand Filters
