What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

I have SP3215Z1BE, but want to upgrade the HP on it, is this the next step up that will work with my system, if so, anything else I need to buy to swap out the motors.

Hi, Steve. This motor would be the next size up from what you currently have. You would first need to confirm if your system can handle the additional water flow before installing a larger motor. If your system can then you will need to also replace the Impeller - SPX3220C, Impeller Ring - SPX3021R along with all of the o-rings which can be located on the Hayward TriStar Parts page.

Hello, I'm trying to replace my motor for my pump. Would you be able to tell me if this is the right part? I know the part numbers match but I want to make sure before purchasing.

Hi Robert, yes this is the correct single-speed motor replacement for your motor model sp3220z1be. It is also recommended to replace the seals when replacing a motor. If you have the original Hayward Tristar pool pump then you will also need the GOKIT81 to replace the seals.

My pump motor is SP3220Z1BE and this looks like a match but my pump is a pentair whisperflo whereas this description shows Hayward. I assume the motor is compatible but wanted to verify first, thanks.

Hi Saliba, yes technically this motor can be used on certain Pentair Whisperflo pool pump models. Just be sure to make sure the motor specifications match between the two.

Hi Saliba, could you send us a few photos of your pump and motor? Please take a close up shot of the motor label as well as a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation.

I already bought and installed this one and it worked fine. Perhaps I could have purchased a slightly cheaper one but I’m good now.

My pool pump is sp3220z1ber, which is discontinued as you said. Would you please let me know which model would replace the old model? Thanks.

A  Answered on 2/17/2022 by InyoPools Product Specialist Rich N.

Hi Fred, the Century 2.0 HP Square Flange Full Rate Motor - SQ1202 will be a perfect replacement for your discontinued motor.  Don't forget to order a Tune-Up Kit for your Hayward TriStar pump so you can replace the old o-rings and motor shaft seal with new ones for a leak-free project.

Hi Joe, I am sorry to say that we do not have information on the start or run capacitors for that motor.  If you take them out and if the labels are legible, you can look at what we have for replacement start capacitors and run capacitors on the linked webpages.  See our guide on How To Replace a Motor Capacitor to be sure you do it safely.
