Is the HP the only difference between the ECM27SQU, and ECM16SQU?. My pool is 12000 gal, with a 420 filter system. Would either of these motors do the job? I spoke on telephone with CS and was advised (for California) to get the 27 motor to replace my Pentair 177450. I think I was quoted the price for the 16 and not the 27. Also do I need the extra controller, or is that optional? Thanks

Hi, Andy. The HP, interface and features are the difference between the two. The ECM16SQU is the correct replacement option for Part # 177450. You will need to use an On/Off timer with the ECM16SQU or purchase the V-Green 270 User Interface - 2520652-001

A  Answered on 6/4/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Scott. Based on the original pump model CHII-N2-1/1/2A, if using the original impeller and diffuser the ECM16SQU VS motor can be used. However, if the pump Impeller and Diffuser was changed to match the current B2983 motor, then you will need to use this ECM27SQU. You will also need to get the Challenger CH Tune Up Kit - GOKIT5 or GOKIT5SALT

This pump work with pentair challenger 1-1/2 impeller

 Reply

A  Answered on 6/3/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Yes this would work but if you do not swap out your impeller then you would only be getting the output of the 1.5 HP and you would not take advantage of the higher HP range from 1.5 HP to 2.7 HP. Because of this, I would suggest the ECM16SQU Square Flange Replacement Motor 1.65 HP. You will also need a Pentair Challenger Seal Kit when you replace your motor.

Patrick I sent another question earlier about the 1.65 and told I need the 2.7 That question and answer is under the 1.65 motor so I am confused

Hi Scott, That motor information helps a lot. Your pump has a true HP of 2.2 HP so if you stayed with the same impeller you would need to go the 2.7 HP motor and if you wanted to go to the 1.65 HP then you would need to replace your impeller with this. 1.5 HP Uprated Challenger Impeller

We unfortunately, do not carry a variable speed motor with a 56 frame. You can use this model and either use different pump motor rubber boots or rest it on something of your choice.(with the understanding of a high temp motor on it)

What does Speed:Variable mean? How many options are there? Is it high/low or is there more than one option? How does the pump know which one to use and when?
 Reply

A  Answered on 5/30/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi. The term variable speed is a type of motor that is controlled by a variable frequency drive. This drive allows the motor to operate at various speed and voltage. Variable speed motors usually have 3 or more programmable speed versus a dual speed motor has only two. You will need to program the controller to switch speeds.

considering this to replace my 5 year old EcotechEZ VS3hp motor. I know that product has had issues (Recall, etc) and mine is now cutting out with a high amps message. My question is between the 2.7 hp and the 1.6. My pool plumbing is old (1.5”) and the original 1 hp SR Dura Glas pump. Tech told me the system was undersized for the 33,000 gal pool. Fast forward to a new pentair 420 cart filter and Ecotech pump today. Worked great but I have had other techs tell it may be too much hp for pipe.

A  Answered on 5/3/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Andrewk. Your pipe size is too small to use with a 2.7 or 3 hp pump. The max water flow that you will able to get is about 86 GPM.

Yes, this would be a correct motor replacement, and it can run independently of the controls as long as there is electrical current provided to it. Also, we recommend replacing the seals and gaskets. For a standard chlorine pool it is A GOKIT32 and for a saltwater pool, it is a GOKIT32SALT.

I have a Superflo and was wanting to upgrade to the VGreen 2.7 variable speed motor. However, the pump still has the 1.5hp impeller. To upgrade to a higher horsepower impeller would I need to replace just the impeller, or would I need to replace the diffuser as well? Also, does the Superflo pump housing flow enough water to capitalize on the higher horsepower motor, or would it be better to just buy the whole the pump with a higher horsepower?

A  Answered on 6/7/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Hector F.

You do not have to change the impeller or diffuser. The motor calibrates per the impeller and diffuser but you can replace them if you want to. There is no real need to change the housing as well.

The ECM27SQU would be the motor that you would want to go with. The ECM16SQU would not have enough power. Just keep in mind that these ECM motors are not as wide so may not rest on the pump base the same way.

I have Waterco Supatuf pump. 1HP with 1.65 SF and 48Y. I think existing pump is undersized for with pipe runs and am considering this variable speed pump. What modifications would I need to make to impeller or any other part? I have looked at 1.65 variable but wish it was 2HP. Thank you!

This motor will work as a replacement motor for the SP3400VSP however the controller is different than your original controller. If you are using a Hayward automation system like the ProLogic then you will get less read out on your ProLogic controller if using this motor. If you are needing the complete pump then you will need this SP3400VSP Hayward TriStar Variable Speed Pump.

I have a 1 1/2 hp Hayward super-pump on a 40K in-ground pool. The pump has always had problems priming; it usually takes 30-45 minutes or longer to prime and takes longer each year. Lately it can run one hour without priming; is it likely that the motor still runs but something else such as the impeller is effecting it's ability to prime? Should I install a check valve, a larger pump etc...??
 Reply

A  Answered on 8/4/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Megan C.

Hello. Yes, there are other parts internal that can cause the pump not to prime properly or not at all. I recommend to take the pump apart and inspect the Diffuser O-Ring, the Diffuser, and the Impeller, those parts all aid in priming the pump. Ideally, if any, or all of the items are damaged/cracked they will need to be replaced. Click here to view the Hayward Super Pump Parts. Also, 40k is a good size pool, that may require a more heavy duty pump. It may be worth reviewing the Hayward Super II, Energy Efficient Pump product line (EE= Energy Efficient).  Click here to view the Hayward Super 2Pumps available. You may also find our How to Size a Pool Pump for Your In-Ground Pool Video/Guide helpful, click here to view.

Good afternoon, I currently have a 1HP Pentair Challenger motor/pump and need to increase HP to support new waterfall feature. Can i just replace the motor, impeller and seal? Or do I need a complete pump replacement? Thank you...

A  Answered on 5/24/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Tony if you did want to increase the HP then you would also need to replace your impeller and shaft seal as you stated in your question. So no need to replace the entire pump.

Hi Tom, This motor can replace your existing 2 hp motor on the Challenger Pump. You will also need to replace the seal which can be found via the Pentair / Pac Fab Challenger Parts.

I want to buy a variable speed motor with integrated timer to fit my wfe-3 pump the motor is a A O smith motor square flange bw8-13 what do i need to hook up everything.

Hi Andy, This motor will mount to your WFE-3 pump, however, the impeller for the WFE-3 pump will be too small to be used with this motor. I would recommend replacing your impeller with p/n 073129 or 073130 and also, get the Pentair/Purex Whisperflo Tune Up Kit p/n GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT.

will this work as a replacement for the motor and control for a hayward spx3400z1ecm ecostar pump motor and control?
 Reply

A  Answered on 4/13/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Megan C.

Hello, Chip. It is best recommended to replace the Motor Assembly SPX3400Z1ECM and the Drive-VAR SPX3400DR or Drive-VAR-SVRS SPX3400DRVR with the Original Hayward Components, in order to not lose any design features from the Manufacturer. It is also important to take into consideration if you have an Automated System, you will need to continue to use the Original Hayward Products to get the total functionality of both systems. The 2.7 HP Variable Speed Pool Pump Motor Square Flange PART# ECM27SQU will work as a replacement motor for the EcoStar but will not perform at the same levels as the originally designed equipment. Do not forget to replace the Shaft Seal PART# 5112-216 any time you replace the motor on your Hayward EcoStar Pump.

Hi Derek, You can use this motor with the WFE-3 pump, however if you also want to increase the water flow you will need to change your impeller to p/n 073130. We also recommend that you get the Pentair/Purex Whisperflo Tune Up Kit GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT.

I currently have a Pentair CCP320 filter and a WFE4 pump with an A.O. Smith 1 hp motor. My pool is 22k gallons and I have an 8 10x4 panel solar system on my second story roof. Can I use this pump and would i get better performance than the 1.65 hp pump ECM16SQU?

Hi Harry, If you go with the ECM27SQU you will have to change your impeller to p/n 073130 and also get the Pentair/Purex Whisperflo Tune Up Kit GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT.

Which tune up kit should I get for this motor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 12/21/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Charlie R.

Brian,The tune up kit pertains to the make and model of your pump housing, not the motor. If you're able to get the make and model of your pump, we'd be more than happy to recommend the correct tune up kit for you.

Hi there, does the display on the drive on the motor rotate? I hate how the Pentair intelliflo does not rotate and is ridiculous to try and see it when the pump is close to our fence. I want to replace the motor with one that I can rotate the display otherwise its a waste of time.

I have a USQ1202 motor on my pump. The system is controlled with an Aqualink RS4 controller. How would the variable speed pump tie into the control system that controls the spa, pool cleaner, heater, valves and current pump? Thanks
 Reply

A  Answered on 7/14/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi Steve, Your Aqualink RS4 controller will only tell the motor to turn On/Off, then whatever settings you have programmed into the motor will take priority until the controller turns it off.

I have a Jandy stealth SHPF-2.0 pump single speed. I want to add this motor to reduce energy consumption. If this motor is added do I need to change the impeller? Will performance be equivalent to a Jandy epump? Will I get the max flow of a 2.5hp? Single pump pool use the pump for circulation of pool and spa, spa jets (in spa mode) and pool vacuum.
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/7/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Robert M.

Hello Scott - This motor can be added to your SHPF-2.0, This would essentially convert it to an e-Pump. The impeller would not need to be changed. This motor would be able to provide the flow of a 2.5 total hp.

Tom, P/N B977T will be the correct motor based on the model number you provided. You'll also need GOKIT2. You can reuse the other parts like the impeller, diffuser etc. if their in good condition.

I want to replace my K48M2PA105 pump motor (which is close to dead) with this unit VGreen ECM 27SQU but I see that it is a 56Y frame. Is this adaptable to my existing pump (48Y)? Also my existing motor is a 2HP while this unit shows max rating of 2.7. Is this the appropriate HP to replace the old 2hp single speed? Thanks
 Reply

A  Answered on 12/5/2014 by InyoPools Product Specialist Brian M.

This VS Motor would be a fine alternative. 56Y frame Square Flange motors are 1/2" wider (body diameter) than 48Y frame with Identical hole Spacings on the Flange. They are inter-changeable. The 2.7 HP of the ECM27SQU is the MAX it can run. You will decide, when setting it up, how powerful it will be. That is the nature of the variable speed.

Yes, you can switch over to this Variable Speed motor and should bolt right up to your Pentair pump.

Needed to upgrade my single speed motor to a more energy efficient variable speed.

Written on 11/7/2019 by Guest

I first contacted INYO Pools and spoke to one of their friendly customer service representatives who assisted me in the selection of the correct replacement motor to fit the existing pump. The service representative ensured all my questions where answered and went beyond a step.

Once I received my variable pump my V-Green 2.7 HP Square Flange 48Y Variable Speed Motor - ECM27SQU, The step by step DIY video that INYO Pools provided me was great. Mind you, this was the first time that I have done something like this. The entire process took me about an hour and half to install.

Interface Control would not power-up or function

Written on 4/1/2017 by Guest

The V270 Green manual is incomplete. There is no mention in the User Manual of the micro-switches adjacent to the 4 pin communication connector in the terminal box or of their function. Once the internal plastic cover is removed (Figure 12 ) four white switches can be seen in a "red" mount. All four of these switches must be in the "on" position for the User Interface to function. My unit came from the factory with switches in the "off" position. After numerous discussions with supplier technical people who were also unaware of these switches it was determined the number 1 (power) switch should be in the "on" position. However, having only switch 1 on does not work. All four switches must be in the "on" position. The User Manual should be updated to indicate these switches must be in the "on" position. I assume some units may come from the factory with these switches "on", and therefore there would be no problem.

Old pool was.costing too much to run

Written on 2/13/2017 by Guest

My old pool pump was running a 2 horsepower Century A o smith motor. Taking the old motor off was straightforward. Turned off all power running to the pump. Opened the pump strain error to clean it out and release pressure. I took a ratchet and loosened the bolts on the housing. The old impeller was 1 hp and missing the retaining screw on the end. All I needed to do to pull the old impeller of was to lock the old motor with a wrench. The old impeller was warped from overhearing at some point. I replaced the impeller and the shaft seal fairly quickly once I got the bolt to hold the impeller in. I just took over servicing my pool myself after letting go of my pool man, and there have been many things that I've found that have been done over the years to this system. Imstallation was simple, I suggest hooking up the wiring first if your clearances are tight to make things go smoother. Lubed up the o rings and boled the motor/impeller/diffuser all into the pump housing. The most difficult part was getting the wireless interface that I bought for the whole unit to communicate properly. After installing this motor my pool is crystal clear. I will update with savings in 2 months.
