How do I drain / winterize the heat pump?

Turn off the power supply. Disconnect the unions on the water inlet and discharge lines. Tilt the heat pump slightly toward the fittings to insure all the water in the heat exchanger has drained out.

In reference to a question posed about the 21404t, I asked about the operation in temps below 60°. What are the differences in this unit, and what are the low ambient temperature tolerances for the 21404tc, rather than the 21404t?

Hello, this heat pump is designed so that it can work well in colder climates, whereas the other heat pump would not work well.

The arrangement of pool system components other than as illustrated previously and in the following diagrams can affect the operation of the heat pump’s water pressure switch. Location of the heat pump above or below the elevation of the pool water surface can also affect the operation of the switch. In general, the pressure switch can be adjusted to accommodate this effect if the heat pump water connections are no more than six (6) feet [1,8 m] below the pool water surface or no more than fifteen (15) feet [4,6 m] above it. See instructions for pressure switch adjustment in the heat pump start up the section of this manual. If the heat pump is installed outside of this range, an external pressure switch may need to be installed in the plumbing upstream of the heat pump. Does this have to work in conjunction with your regular pool pump or does it replace it?

Hello- The Hayward Heat Pro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU (Low Ambient) HP21404TC will need a pool pump to operate. This is simply an electric heater.

Got the heat pump and removed all the boxing. Used a hand truck to put it in place. I was replacing a oil fired boiler for the heat source. The pluming to the heat pump was done with 2inch pvc with unions so as to make winterizing as easy as possible.
Wired the pump to the breaker panel with #6-3 cable to a 60 amp breaker. Turned the system on and it worked perfectly. This was the best thing I have done for this pool.

We have an 18x36 in ground pool and live in south western Pa. I wanted a heat pump to extend the swimming season for the grand kids. We don't have gas here so a heat pump was the way to go. I placed the order over the phone and the heat pump arrived in less than a week. I didn't have sufficient size wire to the pool to support the heat pump so I had to run heavier wire through the existing underground conduit. That was probably the most difficult part of the whole process. I ran about 60 feet of #6 copper wire to a new breaker box I installed in our pool house. I ran about 10 more feet of #6 from the box to the heater. I used a 50 amp breaker and installed an outside disconnect. It was simple to connect it up. The plumbing took a little longer but was not difficult. I took my time planning it and glueing it all together so I didn't have any leaks. I put in a bypass so I could run the filter without having water go through the heater till I got the pool water clean and ph correct. It was still too cold outside and I had to wait a couple weeks before we opened the pool and got the pool clean to try it out. I turned on the breaker and flipped on the switch and it started right up. By now the air temp was in the 70s. I left it run to see what it would do. The water temp was 52 when the pool was opened. Just running the pump during the day I could raise the pool temp about 5 degrees per day. In a few days the pool reached the set temp of 85. I'm perfectly happy with this heat pump. It appears to be doing what it's supposed to and it's pretty quiet too.

Easily maintaining 80 degree temperature, and not breaking the bank on electricity costs. Air temperature was 46 degrees this morning, pump was still heating! By contrast, the last pool heater I had was natural gas and it cost a small fortune to run.

I have a 40' pool and Massachusetts, and was nervous about buying a heat pump because I wasn't sure if the ambient temperature would be enough (and early enough in the day) to heat the pool to any noticeable amount. I also hadn't used Inyo Pools before, so I was additionally nervous because their price so much cheaper than other places I'd found it. But, I figured I'd give it a shot. Well it turned out to be a great decision! If you want to know my full experience, read on. If not then here is the bit you probably want... the pump raised the pool water (roughly 17000 gallons) from 74F to 90F by lunch time. My pool is now never below 85F and I don't even bother with the solar cover anymore. I haven't really noticed much of a dent on the electricity bill either, since it's basically just a massive aircon unit that dumps heat into the water instead of the outside air. It's not silent, but it's as good as. Nobody really notices the noise, and it's not much louder than the water pump. So, for the experience.... The heater was packaged well, and delivered on time. Pay attention to the tips on receiving the delivery and speaking with the third party driver. Sure enough, they didn't want me to open the packaging - so I stood my ground and opened it myself to their objection. Everything checked out, so I signed for it. I asked customer services about moving the heater, because I would need to tilt it to get it up to the pool. They responded almost straight away. Some neighbors helped me move it from the driveway, across the yard (35 degree incline) and to the poolside. It was heavy, but three of us with a small trolley had no trouble. I couldn't run this from the circuit powering my pump, so I had an outdoor 100A breaker panel put in. This gave me plenty of capacity for the heat pump, as well as any future installations (lights, sound system, hot tub etc). Finding a plumber to do this was difficult. Nobody would do it unless I had bought the pump from them. In the end, I did it myself and it only took an hour with pipe from Home Depot and a check valve from Amazon. I am not what you would call "handy" so that speaks to the simplicity of it. All I needed was a saw and some PVC glue to splice the pipework. The end result is a warm pool that stays warm. My visitors all comment on the temperature and it's genuinely the best purchase we made this year. I am very happy with the product, the price, and the customer service and can definitely recommend this as a purchase.
