I purchased this unit to upgrade and replace my StaRite motor. I wired this up for 115 but after 1 minute of operation it began to smoke and over heated. I am not sure what is wrong with this motor can you give advice on how it is supposed to be wired as as the picture on the motor for the lines may be incorrect. thank you in advance.

A  Answered on 10/24/2019 by Industry Professional

You may want to call Pentair ( StaRite ) direct help line it sounds like you are sending too high of voltage to motor and you need to wire it correctly. 1-800-831-7133 .

Generally what you are describing is sending 220v to a motor wired for 115v, which will do exactly as described. Sending 115v to a motor set up for 220v does not usually create any damage. see images we added

I do understand what you say about 220 V/A/C, but I only have 115 V/A/C to that circuit because that is what the previous pump used so that is not the issue. I am not sure what the images show because you offer no direction to what the circles mean. would you please clarify your explanation. thank you in advance.

I just bought a century bn35v1 motor from you, hooked it up and discovered that it must be set to 230 volts since it cycles constantly. How do I change the voltage on one of these?? (The chart on top talks about blue and brown wires which are not in evidence when I take the back cover off) Thanks

A  Answered on 8/14/2019 by Industry Professional

Single-speed motors go out wired for 230v just in case the supply voltage is wrong. You can supply 110v to a 230v motor without doing damage, supplying 230v to a motor wired for 110v will cause damage. Take the black wire that should be on the # 5 terminal & move it to the # 6 terminal.

If you are not sure of that model you can always send us images to upload@inyopools.com so we can confirm.

Good morning Don, Unfortunately we do not carry that motor. The only way to get that low of a horsepower is to get a dual speed and run it on its low setting. You do not have to get the same horsepower but if you change the size of the motor you will have to change the impeller to match. By changing the impeller you are pumping more water changing pressure and flow. Here is a link to all the parts we sell for that current pump. Vico Ultima & Ultima Plus Pump Parts

Hi Christine. The BN35V1 motor is the 1.5 HP replacement motor for all of the older JWPA series pumps.

I have an Optiflo 347986 1.5 HP that I need to replace. I'd like to replace it with a 1 HP duel speed motor. Can you help me with the replacement including shaft seal kit? Also, does it come with an on/off switch including toggling between the speeds? Thanks

Hi George, If you replaced your 1.5 hp motor with a 1 HP dual speed motor then this would require that you replace your motor, impeller, tune up kit and you would need to purchase a switch separately. All of these items would cost more than a new 1 HP dual speed pump. With this being said I would suggest the 1 HP Dual Speed Dynamo Pump the Dynamo pump does have the hi / lo switch integrated into the motor. It does not come with a cord as you would use the cord from your old pump for the new pump.

I have a sta rite s48a53a03 motor for my above ground pool and want to replace it. Is this the correct replacement motor? what other kits will I need? Thanks

Hi Bill, Yes this is the correct replacement motor for you s48a53a03 motor. The most common Sta-Rite pump this motor was used on was the JWPA series, if you have a JWPA pump then you would require the Sta-Rite JWPA Shaft Seal. If you don't have the JWPA pump then send us an email with your pump model or a picture of your pump and we will let you know the shaft seal you need.

Hi, the old pump currently in my pool has an item number 717744903 with serial number BU714. Would this part be a good replacement to my old pump?

Hello Cesar - The replacement motor should be model number B661. Check out the specifications on the B661 and make sure they match the specifications on your motor.

I'm trying to find a replacement motor for my pool pump but my model number doesn't match what you have listed as the model number. My model number begins with a C48 and yours begins with an SP. Please help.

What we have listed on our chart pages is the pump model number. The model number you have will just identify the motor. If you look on the plastic housing on the pump there should be a sticker which will have the pump model number. You can usually find this by the discharge port on the pump. Once you locate it you can choose the correct replacement motor. Be certain to change the shaft seal and gaskets as needed. You can use our >How to guide if you need help.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Can you replace single speed pump motor with dual speed pump motor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 5/16/2007 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Yes but you can't go with a higher HP than the single speed motor. For example if you have a 1 HP single speed you cannot go with a 1.5 HP dual speed motor; you would be able to use a 1 HP dual speed motor. Customer would need to purchase a toggle switch or timer to switch from high speed to low speed.
