Smith 1 HP Square Flange 56Y Up Rate Motor - B2853 is not the correct replacement motor. You would require the  A.O. Sorry, I thought your system pulled the info from the pump I was viewing at your website. It is an older one...Century Centurion by A.O. Smith #1081. (looks exactly like the picture of the same on your website) CAT: B2848, Serial # 147083M. Part 7-196261-24, TYPE CX, 1 HP, HZ 80, RPM 3450 I have been replacing the Seal every 6 months when the pump starts leaking with the Viton PSR Seal #PSR-100V (box pictured in last question). I'm wondering if a Seal with a stronger spring is necessary?
 Reply

A  Answered on 7/17/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Ed. The B2848 is the correct replacement motor. A stronger spring is not necessary. If the seal leaking that often, the issue might be the seal plate.

The shaft seal and seals needed for replacing a motor depends on the model name and or number of the front pump housing that the motor actually attaches to. If you cannot locate that information you can always email us a few images of that pump housing to upload@inyopools.com so we can further assist.

Hi Debbie, This is the correct replacement motor for the information you supplied. As far as the seal kit goes we will need your pump information... Could you give us your pump make and model information, common pump names would be Pentair Whisperflo, Pentair Challenger, Jandy Stealth, etc.. To supply this information click the reply link below, also if you could send a few photos those are always helpful as well. If you send photos then take a close up shot of the motor label as well as a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get any of this information we can make the proper recommendation.

A  Answered on 5/6/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Anthony, If you wanting to replace your motor then the proper replacement motor is the BN25 Century Replacement Motor If you go the route of replacing your motor you will also need a Tune Up Kit but we would need for you to send us a photo of your complete pump showing the basket and the plumbing ports to be able to suggest that tune up kit. The other option would be a completely new pump and we would suggest the PureLine PL1532 Pure Pro XL as a great replacement and the cost would actually be less than replacing the motor and tune-up kit. If you would like to supply us photos simply click on the reply link below and upload your photos.

A  Answered on 10/11/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Megan C.

We will need the pump model number, not the motor to verify the correct shaft seal or tune-up kit needed. The motor(s) are able to interchange into many different manufacturer's pump housing, the seals are identified by the pump model, not the motor. The term "Square Flange" is referred to the shape of the flange of the motor. *Some gaskets/O-rings are squared but will make a shape of a circle.

Motors have an average life expectancy of 4-7 years or seasons. You may want to have your system inspected. Using a variable speed motor then utilizing the lower RPM'S could potentially gain the extra life. A replacement variable speed motor for your application would be the model ECM16SQU

I am needing to replace a Century PN 193985. You suggested a B853. All the specifications seem to match up except the amps. The amp on the replacement is 6.6/13.2 and on my motor they are SF 7.1/14.2. Are there any issues with these being different? Also, what pump shaft seal do you recommend for a FLO PRO (Jandy Pro Series) Model FHPM1.0 SELF-PRIMING? What else would you recommend I would need? Thank you
 Reply

A  Answered on 5/28/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Tyke. This B853 motor will be more energy efficient than your existing motor. You will need additional parts like the Pump Shaft Seal - R0479400 (OEM), PS-4280 (Heavy Duty), Diffuser/Impeller Hardware - R0480400, Backplate O-ring - R0480300 and or the Lid O-ring - R0480200.

The correct motor replacement motor for you is the model B843 and it is recommended to replace the seals with gaskets. In order to confirm which seal kit that you need we would need to know the model name or number of the front pump housing that the motor bolts to. If you are not sure of what that is then you can always email us a few images of that housing to upload@inyopools.com so we can try and identify it for you.

Hi Tom, No the correct replacement for your 7-193993-05 motor on your Jandy SHPF 1.0 pump is the B848. We would also suggest the replacing the Shaft seal on your Jandy SHPF 1.0 pump as many times if you use your old shaft seal you will have leaking which will cause damage to the new motor. A leaking shaft seal will also void the motor's warranty.

The direct single speed replacement motor is the B853. You can also use a dual speed model being the B2980T but needs to be wired at 230 volt only. Then ofcourse you can use a variable speed motor which would be the ECM16SQU. For that model though you may need to change the impeller and diffuser to use this model to it's fullest capacity.

If your pump is from before 2006 then you would require the 1 HP Jandy Stealth Full Rate Motor for models 2005 and Older you would also require the Jandy Stealth 2005 & Older Shaft Seal. My pump is Jandy FloPro 1 HP model FHPM (single speed). The original motor model is R0479311. Is this the right replacement motor? Also, can you point to me the right kit to buy to replace the seals?

For your Jandy FloPro 1 HP Pump model number FHPM10, the replacement motor will be P/N B853. This pump do not have a kit with all the o-rings  and shaft seal so you'll have to purchase the parts separately.  Jandy Flo Pro Pump FHPM Parts

I have a hayward pump and the 1 hp motor went out. The pump is a EF1000 model and the old motor is a AO Smith part # 7-196336-20 with a Y56Y frame, type CP. The only replacement motor I can find has the frame listed as a P56Y, will this work with my pump housing?

A  Answered on 5/10/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Aron, Here is the Proper Replacement Motor for Your 7-196336-20 Motor. A Y56Y frame and a P56Y frame would be the same thing, all you need to worry about is the 56Y portion.

We would need to know the make and model of your pump common manufacture names would be Hayward, Pentair, Sta-Rite, etc.. common model names would be Super Pump, Whisperflo, Dura-Glas II etc.. If you could supply us with this information along with your horsepower and service factor which are on your motor label then we can give you the correct impeller and difuser.

Hi there, The motors can be swapped with no problem. The difference between a 48Y frame motor and 56Y is that the 48Y has a smaller barrel (i.e. is smaller in diameter). You can put the smaller 48Y frame motor on the pump base. The 48Y frame motors come with a rubber spacer to make up for the smaller circumference. If I'm not mistaken, most of the Sta-Rite pumps should be 48Y frame motors. If you have a 56Y on there, you may want to check the pump base/bracket. Sometimes when going from a 48Y to a 56Y, the base has to be cut to fit the larger motor. As for the impeller screw, the newer motors don't need it. You can simply thread on the impeller and you do not need the impeller screw. As far as I know, only the OEM branded motors would come with the opening in the shaft for the impeller screw. Here is a good article on the topic Do I Need a Impeller Screw For My Pool Pump Motor.

My old pool motor seized, (sta-rite supermax 1hp. PHK2RA6E-102L) when i asked for a quote from the pool co, I have been using for years to replace got quoted $1,468.00 I said no and found a replacement for $145.00 and will install myself, so my question is when installing my new motor (AO smith usq1102 type b) can I take the parts off my old pump, since the impeller and diffuser are in great condition?

That's great to hear that you were able to save so much money by doing the pool motor replacement yourself. Yes most definitely you could use your old impeller and difusser. We have a few great videos which I think should help you out quite a bit when you do this job. The first video I would suggest is the How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor Video the Second video would be the How to Replace a Pool Pump Impeller Video and the third would be the How to Wire a Pool Motor Video.

In a previous post you said that the B853 and 2853 are the same motor but I beg to differ. The B2853 has I reverse thread 1/4 20 type bolt that threads in the end of the shaft to secure the impeller. The B853 does not. Why is that if they are supposed to be the same.

A  Answered on 4/15/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Robert M.

The B2853 is the direct replacement for the discontinued B853. They added the reverse female thread to the shaft because several pumps have an impeller screw.

What is part number for white and what gaskets do I need? Do I need any connectors?
 Reply

A  Answered on 4/13/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Gary - We only carry this motor in Black and not the almond color that comes with the original pump. Most likely you have the Pentair Whisperflo if so then we would suggest the Pentair Whisperflo Tune Up Kit which will include the shaft seal and all o-rings and gaskets needed for your motor replacement. As far as connectors go, I am assuming you are speaking of unions, these are quick disconnects which make the removal of your pump very easy and eliminates the need for cutting any pipe. If you do have the Pentair Whisperflo then I would suggest the Pentair Whisperflo Unions here.

Is it OK to apply large holed screen over the vent holes on my Century 1 HP pool motor body? The lizards here in Florida always try to get inside.

Peter, We sell a pool motor cover. If you plan on making one, the vent holes would have to be large enough so that the motor would not over heat.

IS this a reversible motor. I bought it new, installed it to pump. primed the pump, but it still does not pull water. Checked all the seals, etc.

A single phase motor such as this will only spin in one direction. A three phase has the ability to be wired incorrectly and spin the wrong way. Please check to make sure the impeller is clear of any debris and the pump back lid is secured and the o-ring beneath is lubed properly. It sounds more like an air leak than a motor issue.

I am changing out a my b853 motor for a B2853 motor. Is there a difference in the connections?

This is the same motor there will be no difference in the connections. The B853 and B2853 are simply alternate part numbers for the same motor.

The filter pump motor burned up for our pump.

Written on 5/8/2018 by Guest

To replace the motor, the pump must be removed with the motor attached, then the pump inlet cover and impeller must be removed. Then the motor removed from the pump plate. Remove the pump seals. Remove the power cable from the pump. Attached wires to the new pump. Attach the pump plate. Install new seals. Install impeller, inlet cover. and reattached to pump filter housing. Voila!

I purchased a new motor that fit my pentair challenger pump assembly. I received the motor quickly and was able to swap the motors at a fraction of the cost that a pool company would have charged. Up and running in a hour and a half.

Pool Pump Motor Failed

Written on 1/3/2018 by Guest

I always start any repair (especially one I haven't done in a while) by searching online with Google. It's amazing how much information, especially you tube videos are available. First I searched for troubleshooting. When I turned the motor on manually, it was noisy and shut down after 5-8 seconds. A bad capacitor could have caused the shutdown, but the noise told the motor was bad. It has been several years since I replaced the motor, and since I save so much money shopping online online, my next step was to find a seller. Inyo Pools was priced right ($50 savings from a store) and also offered a wealth of information. What I neglected to do was to dissemble everything to insure I didn't need anything other than the motor. In fact, the copper ring and the 0-ring on the difuser were also worn out and could have been ordered with the motor. So, other than the delay in 2 orders, everything went well replacing the motor. Don't forget to clean every part and lubricate all rubber o-rings with silicone.

My old motor was so loud, I’m surprised the neighbors never complained.

Written on 11/21/2017 by Guest

I watched a couple different videos on YouTube to get enough information and some tips on what to do and what not to do.
Power was turned off at the breaker box.
Took a photo of the connections at the timer box and disconnected the wires.
Removed the clamp that holds the two sections of the pump together and separated them.
Once the pump is apart get it up on a surface where you can easily work. First unscrew the impeller cover, then unscrew the impeller, then disassemble the motor half of the pump. Keep track of the order of all the parts on the shaft.
Once you’ve got the housing and motor half of the pump off, assemble it to the new motor, reversing the order you have just performed. Be sure to use new seals for your task during reassembly. Keep all seals properly greased and clean during reassembly.
Once you are satisfied that you have successfully completed the assembly, attach the wires to the back of the motor and bring the two halves of the pump back together. Before rejoining the 2 halves, make sure you have thouroghly cleaned and heavily grease the seal and surfaces that meet.
Reconnect your wires to the timer box and you should be good to go. Silence is golden!!
