Single-speed runs at one speed all the time. Dual-speed has two set speeds—typically a high speed for vacuuming/backwashing and a low speed for everyday circulation (often labeled “Hi/Lo” or “2-speed”). Variable-speed (VS) lets you set specific RPMs, so you can run lower speeds for daily filtering, which is usually quieter and more energy-efficient (often saving money on electricity over time).

Above ground pool pumps are usually sized for smaller systems with shorter plumbing runs and are often designed to work with above-ground pool fittings and flow requirements. If you’re replacing an existing pump, the lowest-risk approach is usually to match your current pump’s label specs (HP/service factor), voltage, and port size. Oversizing can make a system noisier and less efficient; undersizing can reduce circulation and skimming performance. Matching your current model’s performance is the safest starting point.
